16 SEPTEMBER 2017, SELANGOR TURF CLUB SEPTEMBER MEETING 2017

The Stewards, on 20 September 2017 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of BLACK THORN in the above race. Further evidence was taken from App S Zulfikri, the rider of BLACK THORN, in the presence of his Acting Master, B Trainer Siva Kumar s/o Subramaniam, and Trainer L Moy, the Trainer of BLACK THORN.

App S Zulfikri pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that:

After BLACK THORN laid in abruptly in response to the whip at the 350M, he continued to use his whip in his right hand when it was likely that this would cause interference and affect BLACK THORN’s momentum.

  1. In the last 100M, he rode with a lack of vigour when BLACK THORN was holding a possible winning chance.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App S Zulfikri’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of three (3) months with effect from 25 September 2017 and to expire on 24 December 2017, both dates inclusive, to be served consecutively with his current suspension which will end on 24 September 2017. He was also fined RM10,000/- and advised of his Right of Appeal (11:10am).

App S Zulfikri subsequently exercised his Right of Appeal and applied for a Stay of Sentence. The Stewards considered the application for a stay which was allowed. The appeal hearing will be held at a date to be fixed.

RACE 7 (R1171) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE B), SUNDAY, 17 SEPTEMBER 2017, SELANGOR TURF CLUB SEPTEMBER MEETING 2017

RACE 1 (R322) CLASS 5 – 1100M

PRINCE ISLANDER (S Anandan) hesitated at the start, jumped awkwardly and was slow to begin.

Approaching the turn at about the 800M, COSTNER (TM Wan) was inconvenienced when tightened on the inside of I’M KOOL (App M Sathiaa) and PROPITIONS GOLD (S Sandana) which received some pressure from AMPED (App Z Khairil). Shortly afterwards, COSTNER checked after brushing the inside running rail and lost some ground.

JP SUMMER (J Shankar) was trapped wide on the turn at the 700M.

App Z Khairil, the rider of AMPED, was unbalanced on the turn shortly after the 700M, causing his saddle to momentarily shift to the offside.

POLO GAGA (M Ganeesh) drifted outwards under pressure in the closing stages.

Jockey S Sandana, the rider of PROPITIONS GOLD, reported that his mount was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormality.

App M Zairi who rode his 40th winner on DYNAMIC TRIO in this race, would only be entitled to claim 2kgs allowance as from Monday, 13th March 2017.

When questioned about his ride on ZAC GALLANT, Jockey S Thai Yang advised the Stewards that it was his first time riding ZAC GALLANT and Trainer S Hamilton had told him that this horse could be very difficult in the barrier and as such, the stable had requested 2 handlers to hold this horse in the gates. After jumping from the barrier, Jockey S Thai Yang did not chase ZAC GALLANT forward as instructed and ended up further back than he had intended. Once at the rear, ZAC GALLANT began to race keenly and was unable to stay towards the inside and commenced to race wide on the turn from the 800M whilst making up ground. Trainer S Hamilton confirmed the instructions for this horse were to be closer to the pace and advised that this horse was difficult in the barrier and he was to be mindful. After considering the matter and reviewing the video replay, the Stewards advised Jockey S Thai Yang that they were not entirely satisfied with his ride as he should have attempted to maintain a more forward position earlier after the start. His riding instructions and training programme had been unchanged. His explanation was noted and his attention was drawn to the Rules regarding “in-and-out” running (MRA Rule 117(3)).

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BALBOA, Trainer K Coetzee stated that the gelding had been working well and was expected to run well today.
