CHINESE TEA (8 b.a.g Magnus – Forewarning Magic Albert)

CHINESE TEA is heading for another tilt at the Tunku Gold Cup after a resounding win in the Metro A set-weight event over 1200m at Sungai Besi here today.

The Australian gelding by Magnus was unplaced behind AWESOME STORM and SAN ANDREAS in the last two editions of the 1200m sprint but with the eight-year-old back in good form, trainer Frank Maynard is eagerly looking forward to this year’s race.

CHINESE TEA last won a Metro A race over 1200m three starts back in October.

Jockey Hafis Saari, who rode the gelding in his last three starts, again took to the saddle.

EYE GUY set the early pace with the favourite AWESOME STORM in close attendance. CHINESE TEA moved up to third when the field settled down.

AWESOME STORM ranged alongside EYE GUY at the 800m and the pair led into the straight with AWESOME STORM just in front. at the 400m, CHINESE TEA was right behind them on their outside.

AWESOME STORM was beaten at the 200m and CHINESE TEA took a clear lead, chased by THE MAREENA MANGO. In the final 100m, STREETS OF FIRE also staked his claim with a powerful run but to no avail. CHINESE TEA was home with two lengths to spare.

“He’s had a couple of little issues and it’s good to get him back in good form,” said Maynard.

It was a good win. He was strong to the line and he is heading for the Tunku Gold Cup now. I might even put blinkers on him to sharpen him a little bit more.

By the time the Cup comes around he will be in good form with all the issues sorted out. He is on the improve and can race on pace so he is perfect for the Cup.”

CHINESE TEA has shown potential from the very beginning of his career with three wins and two seconds in his first five starts for trainer Charles Leck.

Trainer Teh Ming Wan also managed a win in four runs under him but Maynard has nursed him back to health with another three wins.

It’s now seven wins and five placings in 21 starts for CHINESE TEA.
