Malaysia Captain takes charge for handsome win
KUALA LUMPUR: Mar 5, 2023
MALAYSIA CAPTAIN defied the odds to score an impressive win in the Class 3 – 1075m sprint on the No 2 track at Sungei Besi here today.
The Australian gelding had a tendency to hang out in his races and had just six runs for a second placing in Singapore in 2021. After only two starts last year, the son of Toronado who was bought for A$130,000 as an unraced two-year-old was shipped over the causeway to trainer Richard Lines last July.
Issues with his barriers manner delayed his Malaysian debut and it was only on new year’s day that he took to the races. He finished last over 1075m on the No 2 track after being prominent early in the running.
On the same course and distance today, MALAYSIA CAPTAIN finally showed his true potential when he cruised home by 2 1/4 lengths after settling just behind the pace.
Unlike his previous run when he faded coming into the straight, he quickened and raced past the pacemaker FA FA STAR with ease at the 300m to a handsome win at handsome odds. He paid RM88 for a win.
“He’s a horse that has issues with the barriers since he arrived but kudos to the the barrier team who have done a great job with him,” said Lines.
“On his form in Singapore, we thought he might and was certainly up to winning in Class 3. I am sure there is a few more in store for him.”
An elated winning jockey Ruzaini Supien said: “A very impressive win. He shocked us with his very bad habit inside the barriers and couldn’t run a few times but he made my day today.”
Then known as RESOLUTION, the gelding got his maiden win in Class 5 at the tail end of 2019 and picked up two more wins in Class 4 the following year. He was renamed after being sold to new owners and moved to Malaysia.
