It is well documented globally that the pressures placed on sportsmen and women to perform can cause personal mental, wellbeing and health issues.

The Selangor Turf Club Committee, being aware of this dilemma, enlisted at the commencement of the School, the aid of Sports Psychologist Dr Rebecca Wong  (pictured) to address this issue and ensure the wellbeing of its apprentices.

Renowned for her long time involvement with the Malaysian Institute of Sports and various Malaysian Olympic team disciplines, Dr Wong’s charter was the instruction, guidance and counselling of SLTC Apprentice School students.

Assisted by her team of professionals, Dr Wong essentially forms the backbone of the Apprentice School’s fitness and wellbeing modules, which includes: yoga, nutrition, gymnastics as well as bi-weekly exercise regimes designed by Exercise Physiologist Christopher Pok.

Recently Dr Wong took the opportunity to talk with the students about “Being  Resilient  as a Jockey“.

Having attended track work, stables and race day – Dr Wong has gained a good insight into the particular demands placed on young riders.

This time her approach was from a slightly different perspective – with emphasis on mental wellbeing, where Dr Wong talked about self-caresupport systems and how it all builds mental resilience, thereby creating a positive attitude, thus  maximizing  performance.

The Committee of the Selangor Turf Club is grateful to Dr Wong and her team for their part in ensuring the resounding success of the SLTC Apprentice School

The apprentices were very pleased and excited to hear of the reintroduction of an Apprentice Challenge Series, next year in the recent ‘Racing Toward Global Excellence’ announcement.
