STIPENDIARY STEWARDS’ REPORT

SELANGOR TURF CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING 2019

SATURDAY, 23 FEBRUARY 2019

STATE OF TRACK: Good

Panel of Stipendiary Stewards:

Mr Marcus J Weedon (Acting Chief Stipendiary Steward), Mr Thanaraja Kasinathan (Stipendiary Steward), Mr Nigel Chong (Stipendiary Steward) & Mr Jarry Chong (Stipendiary Steward).

RACE 1 (R238) CLASS 5 (B) – 1100M (SHORT COURSE A)

ACME (S Ruzaini) was slow to find its stride.

RED RACKHAM (S Salee) jumped outwards, causing EAGLE SOAR (J De Souza) to be carried outwards and to be tightened on the inside of MUSANG KING (SU Lim).

NASI LEMAK (J Mallyon) was crowded on jumping between SWINGLOWSWEETJACKY (Y Aify) and MUSANG KING.

EAGLE SOAR laid outwards in the middle stages and continued to race wide in the straight. When questioned, Jockey J De Souza stated that after suffering interference at the jump, EAGLE SOAR commenced to over-race and took charge of him around the bend. He added that the gelding laid persistently outwards and was not responsive to any attempts to correct. EAGLE SOAR threw its head up at about the 500M and then continued to lay outwards on straightening. Trainer R Lines was advised that the Stewards placed a warning on EAGLE SOAR to improve its racing manners, failing which action may be taken against the gelding.

Between the 500M and the 400M, ACME was disappointed for a run on the heels of PHANTASOS (C Goon).

At about the 300M, COLD WAR (R Rueven) laid outwards under pressure causing SONG KID (App L De Souza) to be eased off his heels approaching the 200M. Thereafter SONG KID laid inwards and had to be eased and corrected at about the 100M.

The Stewards questioned Trainer M Sukri into the improved performance of the winner, RED RACKHAM. Trainer M Sukri stated that the gelding had thrived and improved in condition since its last start, 8 weeks previously. He added that today’s race was the weakest that RED RACKHAM had contested.

RACE 2 (R239) CLASS 5 (B) – 1100M (SHORT COURSE A)

GLORY KID (App A Suriya) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 300M, WHAT (App S Uzair) was shifted outwards to obtain clear running on the outside of SUPER GOOD (J De Souza). At this point, PERCIUS (R Rueven) which was attempting the same run, was disappointed and was thereafter shifted to the outside of WHAT.

ELITE KINGDOM (App A Zaimuddin) had to be angled through a narrow gap between LINING TOGETHER (KC Wong) and the rail at about the 150M.

The Stewards questioned Trainer M Sukri, the representative of Trainer PS Kumaran, the trainer of POLO GAGA (S Ruzaini) into the disappointing performance of the mare. Trainer M Sukri stated that prior to the race, the connections were concerned that the 1100M distance of today’s race may be insufficient. He added that POLO GAGA had over-raced in the early stages.

RACE 3 (R240) CLASS 5 (A) – 1100M (SHORT COURSE A)

ZENZERO (C Goon) was slow to begin.

SAND BANK (R Rueven) jumped inwards. The Stewards observed that at the time of the gates opening, SAND BANK’s head was turned inwards, which Jockey R Rueven made no attempt to correct. The Stewards warned Jockey R Rueven that he must take all reasonable measures to ensure that his mounts jump straight in future.

LOVE GOES AROUND (S Ruzaini) was slow to find its stride and had to be urged to remain in touch in the early stages.

GOLDHILL PRINCESS (J De Souza) lost its position, having been slightly crowded by ELF’S DREAM (App WW Cheah) at the jump.

Approaching the 200M, ZOLVED (App L De Souza) was briefly disappointed for a run on the heels of BELIEVE IT OR NOT (KC Wong) which laid outwards.

App L De Souza, the rider of ZOLVED, reported after the race that his saddle slipped backwards during running.

When questioned, Jockey SU Lim, the rider of THAI BAHT, stated that the gelding who had won over a longer distance of 1400M on its last start, was unable to keep up with the early pace today and then laid inwards under pressure in the straight. He therefore did not use his whip until THAI BAHT had clear running directly in front of him at about the 200M, for fear that the gelding would shift further inwards and cause interference.

The Stewards drew the attention of Trainer S Dunderdale to a report from Dr Shri Kanth, the Senior Veterinary Surgeon of SLTC, that SAND BANK’s off hind shoe appeared to be very thin and worn. SAND BANK cast its off hind shoe during the race. Trainer S Dunderdale explained that SAND BANK is a highly strung horse, and was fractious in the pre-race holding yard and repeatedly kicked out at the concrete wall of the holding stall. He added that this may have contributed to the off hind plate being loosened, although he personally checked it before the running of the race.

RACE 4 (R241) CLASS 5 (A) – 1100M (SHORT COURSE A)

SCRAT (J Mallyon) and NATION THEATRE (App A Suriya) were both slow to begin.

ONCE A THIEF (App J Daniel) jumped awkwardly outwards and brushed the side of the gate and was slow to find its stride as a consequence.

ABEBE (AM Aizat) was outpaced in the early stages. Jockey AM Aizat, when questioned, stated that ABEBE needs more distance and the gelding has a tendency to become unbalanced under pressure, therefore he felt it prudent to simply keep him up to his work and attempt to keep in touch in the early and middle stages. He explained that on straightening, ABEBE changed his lead leg and ran on strongly despite receiving some interference from ONCE A THIEF at about the 100M.

At about the 500M, SCRAT was denied a run on the heels of SATELLITE GOLDEN (Y Aify) which rolled inwards away from the heels of FLYING SHADOW (SU Lim).

At the 100M, GOOD PEOPLE (J De Souza) laid outwards under pressure causing ONCE A THIEF to be taken outwards onto ABEBE which was inconvenienced.

NATION THEATRE was persistently denied a run in the last 100M and App A Suriya was unable to ride out with his full vigour.

ALIEN (KC Wong) laid outwards under pressure in the last 50M causing the rider to use hands and heels only in an attempt to keep straight. A post-race veterinary examination of ALIEN revealed that it returned broken-winded and as such will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again.

Jockey J Mallyon, the rider of SCRAT, reported that the mare was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of SCRAT revealed that it was lame near fore and as such will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again.

RACE 5 (R242) CLASS 3 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

SATELLITE BOY (Z Khairil) laid outwards on jumping and brushed with SACRED SURFER (J De Souza).

HAPPY DAYZ (SU Lim) was slow to begin, was soon well behind and outpaced, and was never able to be competitive. Jockey SU Lim reported after the race that his horse was not striding out freely. A post-race veterinary examination of HAPPY DAYZ revealed no significant finding. The gelding which was distanced, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

WAR DRAGON (Y Aify) jumped inwards and crowded PRINCE RAVEN (S Ruzaini).

SHELLOMADA (HS Gill) was badly crowded at the jump between CONDADO (App CK Khaw) and FIRST COMMAND (R Rueven). Jockey HS Gill, the rider of SHELLOMADA, reported that apart from the interference, the gelding might have been placed as its finished the race strongly. App CK Khaw, the rider of CONDADO, in the presence of his Master, Trainer R Lines, was shown the vision of the incident, and warned that he must take all possible measures to keep his horses straight at the jump and to avoid using his whip which may cause a horse to jump awkwardly.

From the 400M, FIRST COMMAND laid inwards under pressure causing D’GREAT LIGHT (KC Wong), which was following, to be taken inwards and awkwardly placed on the heels of RACER KING (HK Cheng) at about the 300M.

From approaching the 200M, D’GREAT LIGHT was shifted outwards to obtain clear running but was disappointed for a run on the heels of LISTEN (AM Aizat) at the 50M.

From the 100M, CONDADO laid outwards under pressure.

LIM’S CASINO (C Goon) which was beaten 13 ¼ lengths will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

When questioned about the disappointing performance of SACRED SURFER (J De Souza), Trainer F Maynard stated that the gelding was racing in a higher class today and had not been suited by becoming involved in a battle for the lead in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination of SACRED SURFER revealed no significant finding.

RACE 6 (R243) CLASS 4 (A) – 1600M (LONG COURSE A)

DROUGHT (Z Khairil) jumped outwards and brushed with BAADSHAH (R Rueven).

BRILLIANT DEAL (A Aucharuz) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 1200M, ELITE CONQUEROR (App A Zaimuddin) commenced to over-race in response to the pace slowing, causing App A Zaimuddin to restrain the gelding and Jockey SU Lim, the rider of BACK TO THE TOWERS, which was following, to restrain to avoid the heels of ELITE CONQUEROR.

Having suffered interference before the 200M, ELITE CONQUEROR was shifted outwards to obtain clear running from the 200M.

KING OPERA which was beaten 16 1/4 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

When questioned regarding the improved run of FIRST PRECINCT (R Shafiq), Trainer S Dunderdale stated that the gelding had benefitted from the fitting of a pacifier today which enabled the horse to relax better in the middle stages and therefore have more energy left for the finish. He added that FIRST PRECINCT had trialled well since his last start 5 weeks previously.

At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey A Aucharuz, the rider of BRILLIANT DEAL, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that approaching the 400M, he allowed his horse to shift outwards when not clear of MAIDANZ BEAUTY, which was badly crowded to the inside of BLOOD ROYAL, which was also taken slightly outwards.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey A Aucharuz’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 25 February 2019 and to expire on 3 March 2019, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.

At the conclusion of an inquiry, App L De Souza, the rider of BLOOD ROYAL, in the presence of his Master, Trainer R Lines, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that he allowed his horse to shift inwards between the 400M and the 300M without sufficient correction causing interference to BRILLIANT DEAL and causing ELITE CONQUEROR to be awkwardly placed on the heels of BRILLIANT DEAL.
