STIPENDIARY STEWARDS’ REPORT

SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2017

SATURDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2017

STATE OF TRACK: Good

Panel of Stipendiary Stewards:

Mr Marcus J Weedon (Acting Chief Stipendiary Steward), Mr Thanaraja Kasinathan (Stipendiary Steward), Mr Nigel Chong (Stipendiary Steward) & Mr Jarry Chong (Stipendiary Steward).

RACE 1 (R1324)       CLASS 5 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

Trainer L Moy was fined RM100/- under MRA Rule 65(5)(c) for failing to produce the declared colours on BOWEN BOY.

Approaching the first bend at about the 1000M, DETERMINE TO WIN (C Goon) took a precautionary check, causing WILL BE BETTER (App AK Lim) to check off its heels which in turn caused FIORELLA (SU Lim) to check off WILL BE BETTER’s heels. At the same time, JOE SWIPER (App KC Wong) rolled in slightly, causing the rider to check and correct which led to a brush with ROCK AND STONE (App S Saddam).

After reviewing the films of the incident, it was established that no particular rider was to be blamed for this incident and as such the Stewards deemed it as a racing incident.

At about the 250M, FIORELLA was forced to switch out to obtain a clear run.

At the 150M, JOE SWIPER (App KC Wong) commenced to lay out under pressure.

The Stewards questioned Trainer LN Danis into the performance of MILITARY STAR (Y Narredu). Trainer LN Danis explained that he had instructed his rider to be handy, but to take the lead if it was easily available, however in hindsight he felt that MILITARY STAR was unsuited for having to compete for the lead in what turned out to be a fast run race.

Jockey Y Narredu stated that he got to the lead easily but thereafter was harassed by MYSTIC WARRIOR (App AM Aizat) and that MILITARY STAR was never able to relax as a consequence. A post-race veterinary examination of MILITARY STAR revealed no significant finding.

DRAGON WALK (J De Souza) weakened badly in the last 200M. DRAGON WALK compounded in the last 200M and as a result GOOD VIBRATIONS (App L De Souza) which was making some late progress, was forced to check and switch out to avoid DRAGON WALK’S heels.

The Stewards questioned Trainer R Lines about the disappointing performance of DRAGON WALK. Trainer R Lines reported that the gelding may have been unsuited by the “firm” track on this occasion. The Stewards requested Trainer R Lines to report back to the Stewards if there is anything amiss with the gelding on returning to his stable. Jockey J De Souza was also questioned but stated that he was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of DRAGON WALK.

At about the 1000M, D’GREAT EMPRESS (HK Cheng) which was leading, raced greenly approaching the bend causing WHAT IFF (R Woodworth) to check off its heels. In doing so, WHAT IFF shifted in causing POKEMON BABY (App S Saddam), SHARON’S STAR (App M Hanif) and LISBOA STAR (J De Souza) to be crowded approaching the bend. CRESCENDO (L Sofhan) was forced to check off the heels of LISBOA STAR as a result of this incident. After reviewing the films of the incident, it was established that no particular rider was to be blamed for this incident and as such the Stewards deemed it as a racing incident.

TEDDY BEAR (H Bukhari) raced awkwardly and ungenerously in rear until the straight.

At about the 300M, POKEMON BABY commenced to lay in under pressure causing HAPPY DAYZ (S Anandan) to be tightened against the rail and D’GREAT EMPRESS (HK Cheng) to check sharply and switch out to avoid the heels of HAPPY DAYZ. D’GREAT EMPRESS was unbalanced by this incident and shifted out causing SKYHAWK (SU Lim) being forced to take evasive action.

At the conclusion of an inquiry, App S Saddam, the rider of POKEMON BABY, in the presence of his Acting Master, Trainer PS Kumaran, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that he allowed his horse to drift towards the rail at about the 300M without taking sufficient corrective measures.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App S Saddam’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of three (3) Malaysian race days with effect from 23 October 2017 and to expire on 5 November 2017, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (6:05pm).

RACE 10 (R1232) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SUNDAY, 1 OCTOBER 2017, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2017

The Stewards, on 10 October 2017 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into an incident at about the 1000M in the above race. Further evidence was taken from App P Haris, the rider of BIG GHOST, in the presence of his Acting Master, B Trainer Veloo s/o Kanniah (BT 8).

App P Haris, the rider of BIG GHOST, in the presence of his Acting Master, B Trainer Veloo s/o Kanniah, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that at about the 1000M, he shifted in when insufficiently clear of IMMORTALITY(App S Zulfikri) causing that horse to be checked against the rail.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App P Haris’ guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of three (3) Selangor Turf Club race days with effect from 21 October 2017 and to expire on 29 October 2017, both dates inclusive. 1. That Trainer SB Tan indicated on the Trainer’s Instruction Form that he wanted GOOD DEAL to be ridden in a handy to midfield position when it was unlikely to be able to achieve such a position, as was demonstrated on its previous start over the same course and distance on 16 September 2017.
  2. That GOOD DEAL’s racing pattern over 1200M had already been established, but Trainer SB Tan did not give App S Zulfikri adequate instructions to ride the race in accordance with this established pattern.

Amendment

RACE 5 (R1227) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SUNDAY, 1 OCTOBER 2017, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2017

The Chief Starter reported that NOVA CANO (HS Gill) got loose from the handler, bolted and galloped a considerable distance. The 1000M/vet (from the starting stall) test imposed on NOVA CANO was rescinded.

RACE 5 (R1169) METRO A – 1700M (LONG COURSE B), SUNDAY, 17 SEPTEMBER 2017, SELANGOR TURF CLUB SEPTEMBER MEETING 2017

The Stewards, on 3 October 2017 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry opened on 17 September 2017 into the running and handling of TRUSON which raced in last place until the home straight where it made modest late ground. Further evidence was taken from Jockey F Yap and Trainer S Cook, the rider and Trainer of TRUSON respectively. Jockey F Yap was assisted by Trainer WC Lim as an interpreter at this inquiry.  Jockey Lou Ho was also called as a witness as he was previously TRUSON’s regular rider.

Trainer S Cook stated that TRUSON has a habit of over-racing and he therefore instructed Jockey F Yap to get the gelding settled with cover before making his effort in the straight.

Jockey F Yap stated that he was able to get TRUSON settled in last place early despite the gelding throwing his head up in response to being restrained. He further stated that the bit was not in full contact with TRUSON’s mount and that he feared that the gelding would run wide if asked to improve his positon. For this reason, he felt unable to take an opportunity to improve on the inside at the 1200M or to make ground on the outside between the 1000M and the 700M resulting in TRUSON getting further back than ideal.

After considering the evidence tendered and reviewing the films, the Stewards decided not to lay a charge under the Rules of Racing. However, the Stewards warned Jockey F Yap that in future he would be expected to ride throughout the race in such a manner so as to leave no room for query regarding his commitment to ensuring that his mounts were well positioned.
