GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC

RACE 6 (R0106) CLASS 4 B – 1175M (Track II), SUNDAY, 28 JANUARY 2024, SELANGOR TURF CLUB JANUARY MEETING 2024

The Stewards, on Wednesday, 31 January 2024 at the SLTC, concluded an inquiry into the riding of CAORUNN and took evidence from Jockey WW Cheah, the rider of the CAORUNN, and Trainer S Hamilton, the Trainer of the gelding.

The Stewards reviewed the films of the incident and considered the evidence tendered. Jockey WW Cheah (CAORUNN) was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) in that in Race 6 on 28 January 2024 at the Selangor Turf Club, he failed to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge being that:

  1. Between the 1175M and the 800M, he positioned his mount in such a manner that it resulted in CAORUNN having no option but to race wide without cover for the remainder of the race. This resulted in Jockey WW Cheah’s mount covering unnecessary additional ground, despite having an opportunity to obtain a position close to the rail and cover;

  2. Between the 600M and the 400M, he allowed CAORUNN to shift unnecessarily wide around the home turn and when entering the straight without any correction. Thereby resulting in CAORUNN covering unnecessary ground in the race; and

  3. In the home straight, he failed to ride CAORUNN with satisfactory vigour and determination despite his mount being in contention at the finish.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey WW Cheah’s mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of three (3) months with effect from 5 February 2024 and to expire on 4 May 2024, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (12:15pm).
