STIPENDIARY STEWARDS’ REPORT

SELANGOR TURF CLUB AUGUST MEETING 2018

SUNDAY, 26 AUGUST 2018

STATE OF TRACK: Good

(Running rail out 4M on short course bend, 2M on long course bend)

Panel of Stipendiary Stewards:

Mr Marcus J Weedon (Acting Chief Stipendiary Steward), Mr Thanaraja Kasinathan (Stipendiary Steward), Mr Nigel Chong (Stipendiary Steward) & Mr Jarry Chong (Stipendiary Steward).

RACE 1 (R1067) CLASS 5(B) – 1400M (LONG COURSE A)

MUSANG KING (App WK Lee) was slow to begin.

POLO MASTER (App CK Khaw) was slow to find its stride.

At about the 1000M, ARCHER COMPANY (R Rueven) laid inwards and brushed the rail.

Approaching the 500M, NOVA ACE (SU Lim) was disappointed for a run on the heels of ARCHER COMPANY.

In the last 100M, NOVA ACE laid outwards under pressure causing COMMODORE LINCOLN (L Sofhan) to be taken slightly outwards in response.

RACE 2 (R1068) CLASS 5 (A) – 1400M (LONG COURSE A)

GOLDHILL PRINCESS (App CK Khaw) was slow to begin.

IMMORTALITY (C Goon) was slow to find its stride.

ROGER (Z Khairil) was observed to be racing keenly in the early stages. ROGER subsequently laid inwards approaching the 100M, forcing the rider to ease and correct.

When questioned regarding the performance of IMMORTALITY, Jockey C Goon stated that the mare was slow to find her stride, and struggled to go with the early pace but then improved approaching the 500M, at which point he felt confident that she would finish the race strongly. However her response to pressure in the straight was just fair.

Trainer SY Lim, the Trainer of IMMORTALITY, was unable to offer any further explanation for her performance which he considered to be disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of IMMORTALITY revealed no significant finding.

A post-race veterinary examination of LIM’S REUNION (App A Zaimuddin) revealed that the gelding bled and will be barred from racing for a period of three (3) months under MRA Rule 92(3) and thereafter will be required to pass a bleeder’s test before being declared to race again.

RACE 3 (R1069) CLASS 5 (A) – 1400M (LONG COURSE A)

Jockey HS Gill, the rider of SMART MASTER, was fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) in that he was late to arrive at the appointed place for mounting prior to the race.

AMAZING (HK Cheng) reared leaving the barrier and was slow to begin.

SMART MASTER (HS Gill) jumped awkwardly outwards.

MEGUSTO (App CK Khaw) jumped awkwardly outwards and was slow to find its stride.

GOLD KIDS (App AM Aizat) was slow to find its stride, and showed no pace in the early and middle stages despite being urged.

RISING STAR (SU Lim) which was beaten 25 ¼  lengths and SMART MASTER which was distanced, will each be required to pass a 1000M/Vet test before being declared to race again for having poor performances.

RACE 4 (R1070) CLASS 4 (A) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

PRINCE RAVEN (S Ruzaini) was slow to begin.

SPIN FIRE (L Sofhan) reared leaving the barrier and was slow to begin as a consequence.

At about the 100M, LA FAMILIA (Y Aify) shifted inwards under pressure causing MAZANDARAN (Z Khairil) to be slightly eased.

When questioned regarding the performance of ROC THAT, Jockey C Goon reported that his mount showed insufficient speed from the barrier to obtain a good early position. He therefore allowed the rider of THE LAWMAN (App W Faizal) which was drawn outside him to cross in front, and as he did so, LA FAMILIA (Y Aify) also crossed in front of him. He thus found himself shuffled back to the last place with little opportunity to improve his position before the straight. Jockey C Goon also stated that ROC THAT responded fairly in the straight and would ideally be suited in a longer distance than 1200M.

The Stewards noted his explanation but warned Jockey C Goon that in future he must be seen to ride his mounts in a positive manner in order to give his horses the best chances to be competitive. A post-race veterinary examination of ROC THAT revealed no significant finding.

When questioned regarding the performance of D’GREAT EMINENCE, Jockey HK Cheng stated that he was unfamiliar with the mare as this was a pick-up ride due to Jockey J Low being injured. He explained to the Stewards that the mare showed tremendous early speed and easily pulled many lengths clear of her rivals in the middle stages without any encouragement. At this stage, he was concerned if he tried to restrain D’GREAT EMINENCE, she would fight him and race even more keenly. He therefore allowed the mare to stride and maintain her advantage which she narrowly failed to hold.

RACE 5 (R1071) CLASS 3 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

D’GREAT SONG (App KC Wong) had to be resaddled behind the barriers due to a broken stirrup iron.

TAFFETAS (App CK Khaw) was slow to begin  but recovered into a midfield position.

BLACK THORN (C Goon) jumped outwards causing AHMAR (L Sofhan) and MR ARMSTRONG (App WK Lee) to be taken outwards. As a consequence, MR ARMSTRONG was slow to find its stride and AHMAR bumped with LAUS DEO (J Mallyon).

Approaching the 200M, MOZART ECLIPSE (Y Aify) shifted inwards under a right-hand drive causing FIRST PRECINCT (J De Souza) to be taken inwards in response.

Approaching the 200M, BLACK THORN laid inwards under pressure.

At about the 100M, MOZART ECLIPSE continued to shift inwards despite the rider changing his whip to the left hand and attempting to correct, and bumped with RUSSELL THE CROWE (App AM Aizat). After reviewing the vision of the race, the Stewards established that no particular rider was to be blamed for this incident and as such the Stewards deemed it as a racing incident.

RACE 6 (R1072) OPEN MAIDEN – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

GHOST SPIRIT (App A Suriya) reared and jumped away awkwardly, causing the rider to become unbalanced.

BIG CENTURY (App A Zaimuddin) was slow to begin and raced ungenerously in the early stages.

Approaching the 400M, GHOST SPIRIT was shifted abruptly outwards to obtain clear running on the outside of NADESIKO JAPAN (App N Varmah). Thereafter GHOST SPIRIT continued to shift outwards under pressure and finished wide out.

When questioned, Jockey S Ruzaini, the rider of DUNE SAGA, stated that the horse had finished well from the rear of the field in its last start and the Trainer’s instructions were for him to drop the horse in behind. He therefore restrained DUNE SAGA after the jump with the intention to take a position directly behind ROTI CANAI (C Goon). However, GOLDEN CHOICE (S Sandana) which was drawn to his outside, was shifted quickly inside, and took the position that he was aiming for. Thereafter he found himself trapped wide and although he made some progress around the bend and believed himself to be sufficiently close to the leaders at about the 400M, he reported that DUNE SAGA produced only a fair response to pressure and raced greenly. A post-race veterinary examination of DUNE SAGA revealed no significant finding.

BIG CENTURY which was beaten 22 1/2 lengths, will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performance.

RACE 7 (R1073) CLASS 4 (B) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

Trainer L Moy was fined RM250/- under MRA Rule 109(1) for failing to present OVERSEER (A Aucharuz) at the pre-race holding area within the prescribed time.

ARECIBO (J De Souza) was slow to begin.

ASTRO MAN (SU Lim) was forced to race wide in the early and middle stages in order to obtain a forward position.

SWEET LODGE (App WK Lee) was disappointed for a run on the heels of CHAR SIEW (L Sofhan) at about the 400M, and was shifted abruptly outwards to obtain clear running in the last strides.

When questioned, Trainer L Moy, the Trainer of OVERSEER, notified to the Stewards at 4:12pm that OVERSEER, which had led on its last start, would be ridden well-back in the field today.  The Stewards reminded Trainer L Moy of his responsibilities under MRA Rule 35(8) to notify the Stewards of any change of riding tactics not later than 5 minutes prior to the start of the race.

Jockey A Aucharuz, the rider of OVERSEER, reported that it was his intention to take the horse well-back in the early stages but OVERSEER had over-raced, and therefore he had settled the mare in midfield. She then finished the race just fairly and in his opinion, had resented being restrained. A post-race veterinary examination of OVERSEER revealed no significant finding.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of TIGER BAY (R Rueven), Trainer F Maynard explained that in today’s race, TIGER BAY drew a better barrier and was able to easily obtain a forward position. He had reported on 5 August 2018 that TIGER BAY received interference in the early stages and appeared to sulk.

JERAM VILLAGE (S Ruzaini) jumped outwards and brushed IVANHOE (J Mallyon).

METALLOCENE (HK Cheng) jumped outwards.

CONDADO (App KC Wong) laid inwards approaching the 300M, and had to be eased and corrected.

RACE 9 (R1075) CLASS 4 (A) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

SACRED SURFER (Y Aify) jumped outwards and brushed with PALTROW (C Goon), which in turn brushed with SATELLITE MAN (HK Cheng).

DAHEES (S Ruzaini) threw its head up on jumping.

Approaching the 400M, SATELLITE MAN laid outwards and negotiated the bend with difficulty, and then compounded in the straight. When questioned regarding the performance of SATELLITE MAN, Jockey HK Cheng reported that the gelding got on the wrong lead leg around the bend and thereafter was disappointing.

Approaching the 300M, VOYAGER (SU Lim) commenced to lay inwards under pressure causing D’GREAT EFFORT (App KC Wong) to race in restricted room between VOYAGER and DAHEES approaching the 200M. App KC Wong reported that approaching the 200M, he checked his mount in order to avoid bumping with DAHEES on his inside. After reviewing the vision of the race, it was established that no particular rider was to be blamed for this incident and as such the Stewards deemed it as a racing incident.

Approaching the 300M, TALISMAN (Z Khairil) was shifted outwards to obtain clear running.

Jockey R Rueven, the rider of YOU KNOW WHEN, reported that his horse raced greenly.

The Stewards acceded to Trainer F Maynard’s request to allow SYMPHONY ECLIPSE (Y Aify) to race without hind shoes as the mare had cast its near hind plate in the saddling area. As the mare became agitated when the Club Farrier attempted to remove its off hind shoe behind the starting gate, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of SYMPHONY ECLIPSE at 6:01pm.

Trainer PS Kumaran was fined RM500/- under MRA Rule 35(8) for failing to notify the Stewards of his intention for LUCKY SIXTYSIX (Z Khairil) to race in a manner different to its most recent starts. LUCKY SIXTYSIX raced well-back in the field in its last 2 (two) starts but shared the lead in today’s race.

GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC

THURSDAY, 23 AUGUST 2018, SLTC TRACKWORK

Trainer SY Lim was fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) as he was observed by the Stipendiary Stewards to be taking FRANKLY MY DEAR (R240), HIGH TENSILE (R239), ROYAL GIBRALTAR (C448), SYMPHONY ECLISPE (E297) and an unnamed horse to the training track after the stipulated opening time for trackwork on the above date.

Trainer Shane Ellis was fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) as read with MRA Regulation 17 in that as the receiving Trainer, he was the person responsible for the lodgement of the Transfer Form when BROTHER WIND (W584) arrived into his stable but the said form was never lodged.

RACE 5 (R959) OPEN MAIDEN [W-F-A] – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SATURDAY, 4 AUGUST 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB AUGUST MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 24 August 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of KITA TEAMWORK in the above race. They took evidence from Trainer Siva Kumar s/o Subramaniam (S Siva), who on 4 August 2018 was the B Trainer to Trainer PS Kumaran, then the trainer of KITA TEAMWORK. Jockey F Yap, who had given evidence to the Stewards on 5 August 2018, was also present.

Trainer S Siva explained that his intention was for KITA TEAMWORK to obtain a forward position, preferably second place, in the early stages. He added that he had given Jockey F Yap instructions about the mare’s tendency to jump slowly from the barrier and to throw her head up in response to pressure on the mouth. He also stated that he had requested KITA TEAMWORK to be loaded last as he felt that she was more likely to become agitated if left in the barrier for a significant period of time. Prior to the commencement of today’s enquiry, the Chief Starter had informed the Stewards that he had received such a request, but declined it on the grounds that KITA TEAMWORK had not previously given trouble at the barrier. The mare was therefore loaded first since she was allocated the inside gate.

The Stewards noted the explanation tendered by Jockey F Yap on 5 August 2018 that KITA TEAMWORK reared and was slow to begin, and thereafter raced greenly in the early stages and responded fairly to pressure in the straight. However, they informed Jockey F Yap that one particular aspect of his riding was concerning, in that his response to KITA TEAMWORK rearing out of the gate was to steady the mare under a tight hold, causing her to forfeit further ground. The Stewards noted that they had inquired into Jockey F Yap’s riding of BEIJING STAR on 25th February 2018 in similar circumstances (R257).

The Stewards warned Jockey F Yap that in future he must take all reasonable measures to obtain a good jump from his mounts and that his performance in this regard would be monitored.
