Selangor Meeting – 10 November

STIPENDIARY STEWARDS’ REPORT

SELANGOR TURF CLUB NOVEMBER MEETING 2018

SATURDAY, 10 NOVEMBER 2018

STATE OF TRACK: Yielding (Races 1 to 3), upgraded to “Good” after Race 3.

Panel of Stipendiary Stewards:

Mr Marcus J Weedon (Acting Chief Stipendiary Steward), Mr Thanaraja Kasinathan (Stipendiary Steward), Mr Nigel Chong (Stipendiary Steward) & Mr Jarry Chong (Stipendiary Steward).

RACE 1 (R1400) CLASS 5 (B) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

Trainer WC Lim was fined RM250/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for failing to seek the Stewards’ prior permission to allow Jockey J Mallyon to ride 1kg over on WILL BE BETTER.

GOLD KIDS (S Mutaza) was slow to find its stride.

TEEN ANGEL (App L De Souza) was slow to begin.

WILL BE BETTER over-raced in the early stages.

Prior to the race, the Stewards were advised that GERMAN SPEED (C Goon) would be ridden in midfield today. GERMAN SPEED jumped awkwardly outwards and therefore found himself in mid-to-back position in the early stages. Between the 600M and the 400M, GERMAN SPEED showed a tendency to lay outwards.

Trainer F Maynard was questioned regarding the improved form shown by the winner, SNOW DANCER (J Low) which after its last start, had been suspended from racing for 1 month until 6 November 2018 under the provisions of MRA Rule 117(3) (“in and out running”). Trainer F Maynard explained that SNOW DANCER had shown more enthusiasm and ability than previously in an Official Race Trial 3 days ago on 7 November 2018  and that in his opinion, the short break from racing had perhaps benefitted the horse.

The Stewards reminded Trainer F Maynard of MRA Rule 117(3) and warned him that SNOW DANCER would be expected to back up this win with a credible performance next time, failing which action may be taken.

RACE 2 (R1401) CLASS 5 (B) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

BULL AND BEAR (App CK Khaw) was slow to begin.

At about the 1100M, ARCHER COMPANY (R Rueven) was eased to avoid the heels of GOLDHILL PRINCESS (J De Souza) which crossed in front.

RED RACKHAM (S Anandan) over-raced in the early stages and in being eased to avoid the heels of ARCHER COMPANY and MR EPIC (App AM Aizat) approaching the 1000M, forfeited ground.

SATURDAY’S DELIGHT (S Salee) raced wide in the early and middle stages.

POLO GAGA (S Sandana) commenced to lay outwards at the 600M, and ran wide around the bend which he negotiated with difficulty. When questioned, Jockey S Sandana stated that as he changed his reins approaching the 400M, POLO GAGA had laid further outwards and was then one-paced in the concluding stages. The Stewards warned Jockey S Sandana that he must take more care not to give away ground by allowing his mount to run wide under similar circumstances in future.

When questioned about the improved performance shown by the winner, GOLDHILL PRINCESS (J De Souza). Trainer R Lines stated that the mare is habitually slow to begin but was able to overcome her bad start today. Jockey J De Souza added that GOLDHILL PRINCESS stood still in the gate as usual, but forfeited less ground today which he attributed to being granted a late load. Thereafter when he urged the mare to recover the lost ground, he was fortunate in that the gaps appeared for him and he was able to make progress through the field to obtain a midfield position at the 1000M.

RACE 3 (R1402) CLASS 5 (A) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

SUPREME STAR (Z Khairil) was checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon at the request of the jockey behind the barrier and was passed fit to race.

THAI BAHT (App AM Aizat) was slow to begin.

SUPREME STAR (Z Khairil) over-raced in the early stages and as a consequence, was trapped wide in the middle stages.

At about the 300M, ZOLVED (App CK Khaw) shifted abruptly outwards under pressure causing DEE MAJULAH (J De Souza) to be taken outwards and Jockey J De Souza to ease and correct.  Shortly afterwards, ZOLVED was corrected and shifted inwards at the same time as THAI BAHT was shifted outwards by TAIL SPIN (J Mallyon) and as a result, ZOLVED and THAI BAHT brushed at about the 200M.

Approaching the 200M, SUPER EIGHT (R Rueven) was shifted outwards to obtain clear running and SOUTHERN HUSSLER (S Anandan) shied away from SUPER EIGHT and brushed with SUPREME STAR on his outside.

App WW Cheah, the rider of PERFECT RUN, was fined RM250/- under MRA Rule 44(12) for making a celebratory gesture with his whip prior to the winning post.

SUPREME STAR which was beaten 17 ¾ lengths and DEE MAJULAH which was beaten 191/4 lengths, will each be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having a poor performances. A post-race veterinary examination of SUPREME STAR revealed no significant finding.

The State of Track was upgraded to “Good” after the running of this race.

When questioned, Jockey O Chavez, the rider of PANCA DELIMA, stated that the gelding commenced to lay outwards from the early stages and that when he loosened his rein at approximately the 300M in order to ride a vigourous finish, PANCA DELIMA laid abruptly outwards causing PERFECT RUN (App WW Cheah) to be taken outwards in response. The Stewards warned Jockey O Chavez that the corrective measures that he had taken at the 200M were insufficient and he was warned to take greater care to keep his mounts straight under similar circumstances in future.

RACE 4 (R1403) CLASS 5 (A) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

Trainer M Sukri was fined RM100/- under MRA Rule 65(5)(c) for failing to produce the declared colours on WINNING STAR (Y Aify).

FRENCH VINTAGE (App A Suriya) jumped awkwardly.

IMMORTALITY (App AM Aizat) was slow to begin.

LIM’S MASTER (C Goon) was slow to begin and became detached before commencing to improve at about the 400M. When questioned. Jockey C Goon stated that LIM’S MASTER, which is ideally suited by a longer distance, was unable to keep up with the early pace but had responded well in the straight. He explained that approaching the 100M, he had been forced to ease and change direction in order to avoid the heels of SANDY MIGHT (App WW Cheah) which compounded.

Approaching the 300M, FRENCH VINTAGE drifted in away from a right-hand drive and buffeted SANDY MIGHT on his inside. SANDY MIGHT had to be eased as a result of this incident. The Stewards showed App A Suriya, in the presence of his Master, Trainer C Leck, the vision of the incident and warned him that he must take greater care to keep his horses straight under similar circumstances in future.

Approaching the 200M, SHARON’S STAR (App J Daniel) was shifted outwards to avoid the heels of SIR HENRY (S Ruzaini) and to obtain a clear run.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner, SIR HENRY (S Ruzaini), Trainer WC Lim stated that SIR HENRY had received interference at the start in his run on 4 November 2018 which had prevented him from obtaining an advantageous early position. He added that the mare had benefitted from an inside barrier draw.

RACE 5 (R1404) CLASS 3 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

Prior to the start of this race, the Stewards questioned Trainer SB Tan regarding GOOD DEAL (S Mutaza). In a previous inquiry on 10 October 2017, Trainer SB Tan’s B Trainer MW Teh stated that in his opinion, GOOD DEAL was better suited by further than the 1200M distance of today’s race. Subsequently, GOOD DEAL has only won and placed over longer distances.

The Stewards requested Trainer SB Tan to explain why under such circumstances, he had entered GOOD DEAL in a 1200M race when a 1600M race was available on the same card. He stated that it was the owner’s preference to run the gelding over 1200M but he personally felt that GOOD DEAL would be better suited by the 1600M race.

GOOD DEAL (S Mutaza) was slow to begin.

NOVA FALCON (O Chavez) was slow to begin but recovered into a prominent position when urged and then commenced to over-race approaching the 1000M.

JERAM VILLAGE (S Anandan) jinked abruptly outwards approaching the 900M. Jockey S Anandan reported that the gelding had done this without warning and not in response to any action of any other horse or rider. JERAM VILLAGE will be required to pass a 1000M/vet test before being declared to race again for having difficult racing manners.

Approaching the 200M, OUT OF NOWHERE (App W Faizal) commenced to lay outwards under pressure and in doing so, caused GOOD DEAL to be taken outwards just inside the 200M.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner, B Trainer Tan Khong Wah, the representative of Trainer BT Lim, the Trainer of DIRECTOR (App A Zaimuddin), stated that the horse appeared to be better suited by the 1200M of today’s race than the 1400M which was the distance of its previous start. He added that this was only DIRECTOR’s second start under Trainer BT Lim’s training. The Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that DIRECTOR returned having cast its near hind plate. The Stewards warned App A Zaimuddin that he must not look around to check the position of other runners when riding a vigourous finish.

When questioned regarding the running of EL CONDOR, Jockey J Low reported that his instructions were to obtain cover on the gelding who has a tendency to race keenly. However he found it difficult to do so and EL CONDOR commenced to over-race from the 1000M, causing him to restrain on more than one occasions to avoid the heels of DIRECTOR. Jockey J Low further explained that when it became apparent to him that App A Zaimuddin was slowing DIRECTOR  from the 600M, he shifted EL CONDOR to the outside of DIRECTOR in order to make progress and allow the gelding to stride. He added that thereafter EL CONDOR was more tractable except for one minor stumble approaching the 400M, and finished the race fairly.

Jockey J Low informed the Stewards that in his post-race report to Trainer F Maynard, he had recommended that EL CONDOR to be allowed to stride on in future races and take the lead if necessary to enable the gelding to relax. A post-race veterinary examination of EL CONDOR revealed no significant finding.

RACE 6 (R1405) METRO A – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)

JUSTICE WORLD (J De Souza) was checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon behind the barriers and was passed fit to race.

JUSTICE WORLD jumped inwards and brushed with TIDAL WAVE (J Low).

MR SCORSESE (S Ruzaini) was slow to begin and was thereafter forced to race wide as a consequence.

GARIZA (O Chavez) was slow to begin. When questioned, Jockey O Chavez, the rider of GARIZA, reported that as a result of the slow jump, he had been unable to obtain a forward position and had been trapped in midfield on the inside with no opportunity to make progress in a slowly run race. He added that GARIZA, when switched outwards to challenge approaching the 300M, finished his race well but that the winner, which had been directly in front of him, was in a better racing position and had taken advantage.

Approaching the 800M, JUSTICE WORLD (J De Souza) was checked to avoid the heels of TAFFETAS (App CK Khaw) in response to the pace of the race slowing.

TAFFETAS (App CK Khaw) laid outwards under pressure in the closing stages.

Jockey O Chavez, the rider of GARIZA, was warned by the Stewards that he must take responsibility for removing the blindfold himself as on this occasion, he had allowed a barrier handler to do it.

Approaching the 300M, RED EMPRESS (C Goon) shifted outwards under pressure at the same time as JJ STAR (HK Cheng) shifted inwards under pressure, forcing Jockey HK Cheng to ease and correct in order to avoid the heels of RED EMPRESS.

App WW Faizal, the rider of OVERSEER, in the presence of his Master, Trainer L Moy was warned that he must not use his whip forward of the shoulder unless in an emergency to avoid contact with another horse.

D’GREAT EFFORT and BACK TO THE TOWERS (S Anandan) brushed at about the 200M.

Jockey S Anandan, the rider of BACK TO THE TOWERS, briefly dropped his rein in the closing stages but was able to maintain his momentum.

App A Zaimuddin, the rider of BIG DALLAS, reported that his horse was slowly away.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of TARZAN (App W Faizal), Trainer L Moy stated that in his opinion, the horse would prefer a longer distance and although TARZAN ran well over today’s distance of 1600M in his last start, he felt that the circumstances had been flattering.

GENERAL REPORT(S) – SLTC

RACE 9 (R1379) CLASS 4 (B) – 1400M (LONG COURSE A), STAR TOTO 6/50 STAKES, SATURDAY, 4 NOVEMBER 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB NOVEMBER MEETING 2018

The Stewards enquired into the running and handling of DYNAMIC EAGLE (S Mutaza), which disputed the lead at a fast pace and eventually finished second.

Jockey S Mutaza explained that he had been instructed to lead on DYNAMIC EAGLE and was happy to have established the lead after the first 100M. However, thereafter WINNING TANGO (App WK Lee) moved up to dispute the lead and caused his mount to be headstrong.

Trainer S Dunderdale confirmed these instructions and added that this was DYNAMIC EAGLE’s first race under his training, and that the gelding has shown such tendencies in his work.

The Stewards accepted these explanations.

RACE 6 (R1376) CLASS 4 (A) – 1400M (LONG COURSE A), POWER TOTO 6/55 STAKES, SATURDAY, 4 NOVEMBER 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB NOVEMBER MEETING 2018

Trainer C Leck was asked if anything had subsequently come to light to explain the disappointing performance of KING OPERA (S Ruzaini) in the above race. He stated that Jockey S Ruzaini had reported the horse to be apparently making respiratory noises but post-race examination had revealed no respiratory abnormalities. He advised the Stewards that he would monitor the situation, and will be entering KING OPERA in a Barrier Trial on 13 November 2018.

RACE 10 (R1317) CLASS 4 (B) – 1300M (LONG COURSE B), SUNDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB OCTOBER MEETING 2018

The Stewards enquired into the running and handling of STREET OF LONDON (Z Khairil) in the above race.

Jockey Z Khairil explained that he wanted to obtain a midfield position but that after a fair jump, STREET OF LONDON was slow to find its stride and DANZEB (O Chavez) obtained the position that he desired for himself. Thereafter he was trapped on the heels of DANZEB and then KUTTNER (L Sofhan) with no opportunity to make progress until he attempted to cover the forward move of KARIGARA (App L De Souza) at the 600M, whereupon STREET OF LONDON produced a disappointing response. Trainer L Moy confirmed that STREET OF LONDON tends to be slowly into stride. The Stewards accepted their explanations.

AMENDMENT

RACE 3 (R1373) CLASS 5 (A) – 1200M (SHORT COURSE A), SPORTS TOTO 5D STAKES, SUNDAY, 4 NOVEMBER 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB NOVEMBER MEETING 2018

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey L Sofhan’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of his suspension. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect from 12 November 2018 and to expire on 18 November 2018, both dates inclusive.
