RACE 1 (R977) CLASS 5(A) – 1300M 

OTTAWA and SUNNY STAR, both course scratching as they were dehydrated and bruised off hind sole respectively, will each be required to pass a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.

TWILL GUY (AK Lim) had to steady at approximately the 800M-mark when GOLD SKY TRILLION (App A Saran) rolled in. 

At approximately the 900M-mark, PROVE IT (F Yap) was momentarily crowded when racing tight on the inside of MAGIC PLAYER (SU Lim).

Jockey KP Lim, the rider of BATTLESTAR, was fined RM500/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for dropping his whip at approximately the 150M-mark. 

Jockey R Rueven, Jockey HS Gill and App WW Cheah, the respective rider of  FIRE AWAY, INVICTUS WARRIOR and GHOST AFFAIR, reported that their mounts were not striding out freely.  Post-race veterinary examinations of FIRE AWAY, INVICTUS WARRIOR, GHOST AFFAIR and BATTLESTAR revealed no obvious abnormality.

The Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that TWILL GUY returned having cast its off hind plate.

RACE 2 (R978) CLASS 5(A) – 1300M

PRATT STREET, a course scratching as it was dehydrated, will be required to pass a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.

Emergency acceptors, MR DUJARDIN and ROCK ARTIST were both withdrawn due to a capacity field. 

LUCKY TIGER (KC Tham) jumped awkwardly outwards, inconveniencing CHERISH (S Ruzaini) which was slow into stride.

STAGESHOW (App S Hafis) was slow into stride.

Approaching the 800M-mark, GOLDEN SHOW (Y Aify) was inconvenienced when racing tight between COLOUR PAINT (HS Gill) and LEESTOWN EXPRESS (App WW Cheah).

Jockey Y Aify, Jockey AM Aizat, and App A Saran, the riders of GOLDEN SHOW, D’GREAT STRIKE and PULAU PINANG respectively, all reported that their mounts were not striding out freely.  Post-race veterinary examinations of GOLDEN SHOW, D’GREAT STRIKE and PULAU PINANG revealed no obvious abnormality,     

The Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that COLOUR PAINT bled and will be barred from racing for a period of three (3) months under MRA Rule 92(3)(a)&(b) and thereafter will be required to pass a bleeder’s test before being declared to race again.

Trainer K Ananthen was questioned with regards to the improved performance of BAGHDAD (App A Azizi) today.  The only explanation he was able to offer was that in his opinion, it was not a strong field, coupled with the fact that this horse likes the soft going.  His attention was drawn to the rules regarding “in-and-out” running (MRA Rule 117(3)) and he was warned that should BAGHDAD continue to be inconsistent in the future, it may be suspended.

RACE 3 (R979) CLASS 4(B) – 1400M 

HORSEH, a course scratching as it had fever, will be required to pass a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.

BRISTOL DIAMOND (App SN Shiva) entered the home straight wide.

The Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that ARAGORN (R Rueven) bled and will be barred from racing for a period of three (3) months under MRA Rule 92(3)(a)&(b) and thereafter will be required to pass a bleeder’s test before being declared to race again.

A post-race veterinary examination of ARIF (App Z Ahmad) revealed no obvious abnormality. 

Trainer HS Lim was questioned with regards to the disappointing performance of SHENG PROISIR (HS Gill) today.  The only explanation he was able to offer was that his horse had been drawn wide and was obliged to race wide on the turn.  His attention was drawn to the rules regarding “in-and-out” running (MRA Rule 117(3)).

RACE 4 (R980) CLASS 4(A) – 1400M 

MULTIBLUE SHARK, a course scratching as it had sustained a bruised left hock, will be required to pass a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.

KANTHAKA which was up 20kgs in body weight since its last run, was checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon prior to the race and was passed fit to start.

BLEU MARINE (SU Lim) was checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon behind the barriers and was passed fit to race.

SILENT BOSS (S Ruzaini) was hanging out in the latter stage of the race.

Prior to the ‘All Clear’ being given, an objection was lodged by Trainer T Asogan, the trainer of SOMAR (App A Azizi), placed second, against SILENT BOSS, being declared the winner, on the grounds of alleged interference in the latter stages of the race.  After considering the evidence and viewing the video, the Racing Stewards were of the opinion that the alleged interference had not affected the result of the race.  The objection was overruled and the result stood.   

Jockey R Rueven, the rider of DISCRETELY RED, reported that his mount was not striding out freely.  A post-ace veterinary examination of DISCRETEY RED revealed no obvious abnormality.

This race was rescheduled to start 5 minutes later at 3.50pm.

CHINA CAPTAIN (Y Aify) and GOLD SKY BILLION (S Ruzaini) were both slow into stride. 

The state of track was upgraded to  “Yielding” after the running of this race.

RACE 6 (R982) CLASS 4(A) – 1100M 

GOLDEN KING, a course scratching as it had sustained nail bind injury, will be required to pass a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.

Emergency acceptors, MR AK and TERMS OF REFERENCE were both withdrawn due to a capacity field.

The Stewards permitted the withdrawal of  D’GREAT RICH at 4.10pm when Jockey R Rueven was stood down by the Club Medical Officer and there was no suitable rider available

Acting on veterinary advice that GOOD LUCK CHARM (HS Gill) was sore off fore foot, the Stewards ordered its withdrawal at 4.21pm.  GOOD LUCK CHARM will be required to pass a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.      

App A Azizi, the rider of MACEO, was fined RM500/- for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) in that he failed to mount when instructed to do so by the Paddock Stewards.

PURPLE RAIN (App S Hafis) jumped awkwardly outwards whilst D’GREAT JOURNEY (AM Aizat) jumped awkwardly inwards, resulting in crowding to PERFECT MISSION (KC Tham), QADIRA MEDINA (Y Aify) and HARVEYWALLBANGER (S Ruzaini) which had also jumped awkwardly.  Jockey S Ruzaini lost the use of his left side stirrup iron in this incident and regained it shortly thereafter.

PERFECT MISSION raced wide on the turn and entered the home straight wide.  

The Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that BIG BUS (App R Nuqman) returned with a cut to its off hind heel.

A post-race veterinary examination of PERFECT MISSION revealed no obvious abnormality 

Trainer HY Cheng was questioned with regards to the improved performance of VETRI (SU Lim) today.  The only explanation he was able to offer was that VETRI was down in class today and this, in his opinion, accounted for the improved performance.  His explanation was noted.

RACE 7 (R983) CLASS 5(B) – 1300M 

TRAVIS, a course scratching as it was tied up, will be required to pass a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.

GET THE LOTSKI (App S Hafis) was withdrawn at 3.06pm when it collapsed in the holding area.  The gelding was administered emergency treatment and was then impounded for further veterinary and analytical examination.

The Stewards permitted the withdrawal of FIRST SUCCESS at 4.43pm when Jockey R Rueven was stood down by the Club Medical Officer and there was no suitable rider available.

The Stewards permitted App S Hafis to replace Jockey HS Gill as the rider of SILVER SIXTYSIX when there was no suitable jockey available.   

PENNSYLVANIA (SU Lim)  jumped awkwardly.

NOVA DASHING (AM Aizat) was slow into stride.

At approximately the 900M-mark, PARISBAS (App Z Syafifie) and LEESTHEWAY (App Z Ahmad) were inconvenienced when EMPEROR WARRIOR (S Ruzaini) rolled in abruptly.  Jockey S Ruzaini was shown the video of the incident and was warned to exercise more care in future.

The saddle on JOON HO (S Zulfikri) slipped back in the running.

App WW Cheah, the rider of POWERFUL DRAGON, reported that his mount was not striding out freely.  A post-race veterinary examination of POWERFUL DRAGONW revealed no obvious abnormality. 

The Club Veterinary Surgeon  reported that PARISBAS (App Z  Syafifie) returned exhibiting signs of respiratory distress and as such will be required to pass a test (1000M/vet) before being declared to race again.

A post-race veterinary examination of EMPEROR WARRIOR (S Ruzaini) revealed no obvious abnormality.  JOON HO returned having cast its near fore plate.

Trainer C Robert was questioned with regard to the improved performance of PENANG MAN (App R Nuqman) today.  The only explanation he was able to offer was that this horse is better suited to the 1300M distance today.  His explanation was noted, however, his attention was drawn to the rules regarding “in-and-out” running (MRA Rule 117(3)).

RACE 8 (R984) CLASS 5(B) – 1300M 

MAKE U FAMOUS and MA BAO BAO are both course scratching.  MAKE U FAMOUS had sustained a swollen right knee and MA BAO BAO was dehydrated.  Each will be required to pass a veterinary examination before being declared to race again.

NOVA PHOENIX and DON’T FORGET THIS which were down 19kgs and 22kgs in body weight respectively since their last run, were checked by the Club Veterinary Surgeon prior to the race and both were passed fit to start.

The Stewards permitted App R Nuqman to replace Jockey HS Gill on PENANG BANK, and App Z Ahmad to replace Jockey R Rueven on D’GREAT CHANCE when there was no suitable jockey available.

ANOTHER SHOW (SU Lim) raced wide on the turn and entered the home straight wide.

The saddle on D’GREAT CHANCE slipped backwards badly in the running, placing the rider at a disadvantage.

A post-race veterinary examination of CHIEF CLERK (KC Tham) revealed no obvious abnormality. 

The Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that HANGRY (S Salee) returned with a cut to its near fore coronet.  RAISE ME UP (KP Lim) returned having cast its near fore plate.

Trainer S Hamilton was questioned with regards to the disappointing performance of HANGRY today. She explained that this horse was drawn wide today and she had instructed Jockey S Salee to ride mid-field.  However, on returning, he said that HANGRY was not striding out freely and the Club Veterinary Surgeon reported that the gelding had returned with a cut to its near fore coronet. 

The Stewards questioned Jockey KC Tham with regards to his ride on CHIEF CLERK.  After consideration, the Stewards adjourned the matter until the following week when Trainer  I Ismadi is present.

HEARIING OF APPEAL FROM APPRENTICE JOCKEY VARMAH A/L NEELAVANAN (APP N VARMAH)  AGAINST THE PENALTY OF EIGHTEEN  MONTHS’ DISQUALIFICATION AND FINE OF RM40,000/- IMPOSED BY THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS FOR A CONTRAVENTION OF MRA RULE 44(8) FOR THE RUNNING AND HANDLING OF “STORM TO WIN” IN RACE 8 (R687) ON SUNDAY, 5TH JUNE 2022,  PENANG TURF CLUB JUNE MEETING 2022

The Penang Turf Club Racing Stewards on 19th August 2022 heard the above Appeal. 

Submissions were made by App N Varmah in the presence of his Employing Trainer, Trainer   C Robert.

After considering the submissions from App N Varmah, Trainer C Robert and the Chief Stipendiary Steward, and reviewing the video replay, the Racing Stewards dismissed the Appeal.  The penalty of eighteen months’ disqualification was confirmed, which took effect from Saturday, 11th June 2022 and to expire on Sunday, 10th December 2023, both days inclusive.  The fine of RM40,000/- (Malaysian Ringgit Forty Thousand) remains in effect.

The appeal deposit was forfeited.

Prior to the running of Race 1, all Trainers were reminded of their obligation that when they wish to use an apprentice in races, they must declare their own apprentice unless prior permission had been granted by the Stipendiary Stewards to use an outside apprentice.  Failure to comply with this requirement may result in a rider change and a fine being imposed.
