GENERAL REPORT – SLTC

RACE 3 (R126) CLASS 4 – 1400M (SHORT COURSE A), SUNDAY, 28 JANUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB JANUARY MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 6 February 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of MEIZU. Evidence was taken from App P Haris, the rider of MEIZU, in the presence of his Master, Trainer BT Lim who is also the Trainer of MEIZU.

After reviewing the films of this incident and considering the evidence tendered, App P Haris was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that:

  1. Approaching the 400M, he looked over the left shoulder when it was not necessary for him to do so, then steered a wide course around the final bend when it was not necessary for him to do so.
  2. At about the 400M, he looked to his left again when no other horse or rider was near him.
  3. From about the 400M, he allowed MEIZU to race wide out and by doing so, he created a large gap to his left which was eventually taken by his stable mate, SWINGLOWSWEETJACKY (HS Gill).
  4. By the actions described in particulars 1 to 3, he displayed a lack of commitment to achieving the best result in this race for MEIZU.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App P Haris’ mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of App P Haris’ suspension. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of three (3) months with effect from 12 February 2018 and to expire on 11 May 2018, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal (2:40pm).

App P Haris subsequently exercised his Right of Appeal and applied for a Stay of Sentence. The Stewards considered the application for a stay which was allowed. The appeal hearing against the penalty of the suspension of 3 months will be held at a date to be fixed.

RACE 6 (R129) CLASS 4 – 1400M (SHORT COURSE A), SUNDAY, 28 JANUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB JANUARY MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 6 February 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of SHELLOMADA. Evidence was taken from Jockey HS Gill and Trainer BT Lim, the rider and Trainer of SHELLOMADA respectively.

Trainer BT Lim stated that SHELLOMADA’s normal racing pattern is to take a midfield or rear position and to challenge late. Jockey HS Gill stated that, as normal, he settled SHELLOMADA at the rear of the field. Although an opportunity to progress on the inside presented itself at the 800M, he anticipated that CATCH ME GREAT (AK Lim) might shift to the inside causing him to be tightened or awkwardly placed. At the 600M, CATCH ME GREAT did, in fact, shift inside and therefore SHELLOMADA had no opportunity to obtain clear running until the straight.

Jockey HS Gill further added that SHELLOMADA took some time to hit top gear in the straight, but finished the race well after being switched to the outside. Having heard their evidence, the Stewards decided to take no further action.

RACE 5 (R080) CLASS 4 – 1200M (SHORT COURSE C), SATURDAY, 20 JANUARY 2018, SELANGOR TURF CLUB JANUARY MEETING 2018

The Stewards, on 6 February 2018 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of TEDDY BEAR. Evidence was taken from Jockey H Bukhari, the rider of TEDDY BEAR, and B Trainer Siva Kumar s/o Subramaniam, the representative of Trainer PS Kumaran, the Trainer of TEDDY BEAR. This inquiry was originally scheduled for 28 January 2018 but was postponed as Jockey H Bukhari was ill.

B Trainer Siva Kumar stated that TEDDY BEAR’s normal racing pattern is to sit middle to back of the field, and to finish the race strongly. He added that Trainer PS Kumaran, who gave the rider his instructions, insisted that Jockey H Bukhari should attempt to challenge close to the inside rail as a bias had developed on the rain-affected track. Jockey H Bukhari stated that TEDDY BEAR travelled well in the race, but that he was unable to make up ground around the bend without switching wide, which would have been contrary to his instructions. He further added that just inside the 600M, the horse in front of him jumped for no apparent reason and TEDDY BEAR jumped slightly in response.

Jockey H Bukhari confirmed that TEDDY BEAR had to weave through rivals to obtain clear running close to the inside rail as instructed, and that he was only able to ride with his full vigour from the 100M. He agreed with the Stewards’ observation that two of his whip strikes in the last 100M had not made contact. Since he had made contact with the majority of his whip strikes, the Stewards gave him the benefit of any doubt with regard to this matter. However, they warned Jockey H Bukhari that in future he should ride all his mounts in such a manner so as to leave no room for query.
