Jockey J De Souza was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 136(3)(b) and the
particulars of the charge were that a urine sample coded J-6186, submitted by him on 18
th
March 2017 at the Penang Turf Club March Meeting 2017, upon analysis, revealed the
presence of “Ephedrine”, which is a prohibited substance under the MRA Rules.
In deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account all the evidence, his previous
record and mitigating factors. Jockey J De Souza was suspended from riding in races
for a period of three (3) months, consecutive to his current suspension, i.e. with effect
from Saturday, 6th May 2017 to expire on Saturday, 5
th August 2017, both days inclusive.
In addition, Jockey J De Souza was fined RM250/- under MRA Rule 44(2) for leaving
the race course early without Stewards’ permission on 18th March 2017.
He was informed of his Right of Appeal (1.30 pm).
NB: On 21st April 2017, Usains Biomics Laboratory confirmed that a clearing sample
submitted by Jockey De Souza was negative to any prohibited substance and in
view of this, the Stewards have permitted Jockey J De Souza to continue riding
trackwork and barrier trials with effect from Monday, 24th April 2017.
On 23rd April 2017, Jockey J De Souza subsequently lodged an Appeal against the
decision and penalty imposed by the Stipendiary Stewards. In addition, he applied for a
