KUALA LUMPUR:  Jan 28, 2024

After finishing third thrice in seven rides in her debut meeting last week, Jerlyn Seow Poh Hui got down to business when she booted home a double at Sungai Besi here today.

Seow created history by becoming the first female to win a apprentice title in the local circuit when she booted home 14 winners in Singapore last year.

Not satisfied with that, she now spreads her wings to Kuala Lumpur where she has been granted a licence by the Selangor Turf Club to ride in the 2024 season.

LIM’S DENALI (6 b/br.nz.m Darci Brahma – Katalli by Elusive City)

Her first win on former Singapore galloper LIM’S DENALI in the Class 3 – 1075m sprint was spectacular.

The Darci Brahma mare was the last to break in the 10-horse field and after the field settled down, she was some 15 lengths from the leader at the 800 mark.

MAGIC CAPTAIN set a brisk pace, with FA FA STAR, TORNADO PEGASUS and SURE WILL DO in hot pursuit.

MAGIC CAPTAIN led into the straight ahead of a line of horses headed by TORNADO PEGASUS. LIM’S DENALI, who is making her Malaysia debut, was still some 10 lengths from the leader at this stage. But at the 300m, the six-year-old suddenly picked up speed and quickened with every stride.

TORNADO PEGASUS ranged alongside the leader at the 200m and soon kicked away. By then LIM’S DENALI was looming large on the outside of the field.

LIM’S DENALI swept past TORNADO PEGASUS 80m out and cleared away to win by three lengths.

“I didn’t expect her to win because it was her first race here (in Kuala Lumpur),” said Seow.

“She had two trials. The trainer told me to give her a nice, comfortable run. It was a great feeling because the horse was flying home like a rocket. Finally I got my first win here.

“I came to Malaysia because I want to gain more experience and improve myself. By the time I turn professional, I can hopefully look forward to ride overseas.

“Also, it gives me the chance to reunite with horses that I have ridden before in Singapore. I was so happy when STEEL CUTTER won (earlier today). He was the first horse that I rode when I started out.”

LIM’S DENALI came over with a record of three wins in 15 starts at Kranji.

“He trialled decently and I expected him to run a good race, ” said trainer Lawson Moy. “I guess the fast pace today suited him. Expect more wins from him.”

Seow wound up the afternoon scoring on ROYAL FLUSH, again bringing the Wandjina mare from a long way back early to win.

The Wandjima mare finished the 2023 season with a win and a second but has not raced since September.

ROYAL FLUSH was beaten for early pace from his outside barrier (10) but Seow managed to work her way between horses in the straight and charged home to win by 3/4 length. It was her third win in 26 runs.

While LIM’S DENALI returned a handsome RM64, ROYAL FLUSH started favourite despite the four-month break and paid RM16.
