Jockey O Chavez (VARIANT) appeared before the Panel and was afforded the opportunity to place on record any factors which in his opinion, contributed to the defeat of VARIANT. In this regard, he explained that after jumping, he took note that Jockey B Pinheiro had committed SUPER BOWL to a forward position, therefore he elected to take cover. However upon doing so, Jockey B Pinheiro himself elected to take cover and as a consequence, Jockey O Chavez elected to sit outside of the leader as his horse takes time to unwind.
He further explained that turning for home, he noted that Jockey SU Lim on MEGA RISING, was inclined to lay out, consequently, he attempted to hold his position and prevent MEGA RISING (SU Lim) from carrying him out and opening up the inside running line, however, despite his efforts, he was unable to do so. In the straight, he explained that when he drew his whip on VARIANT, he felt that his horse became hesitant and did not gather momentum with such encouragement. Accordingly, he elected to merely show the whip over the last 200M, which in his view, resulted in the horse producing its best finishing performance and closing to within a head of victory. The Panel noted the explanation of Jockey O Chavez.
