Pacific Energy wins over Fortune Tree in the 4YO Sprint Championship

After winning the 3YO Sprint Championship (1200m) at the end of last month, Pacific Energy now heads the field in the RM1mil Selangor Mile next Sunday with a rating of 85 points.

But the son of Super Seth is galloping into the unknown, having never been tested beyond 1300m – the distance at which he raced twice for a win and a third from 13 starts in the country.

Pacific Energy is known for his brilliant early speed, racing against the best as a juvenile and three-year-old in Australia with a win over 1100m at Caulfield.

With the ease in which he won the Sprint, his connections are hoping that he will see out the extra 400m.

The horse Pacific Energy beat into second place in the Sprint, Fortune Tree, will probably be the one everyone has to beat again.

Banker’s Smile

The son of Adrossan has raced and been placed over 1600m and surprised a few when came from just off the pace to win the Group 1 Tunku Gold Cup (1200m) last March.

Fortune Tree was spelled after that win and subsequently transferred to trainer HY Cheng.

The New Zealand gelding resumed racing only in the Sprint and picked up 17kg in body weight for the time on the sidelines.

Still, he showed dazzling early speed to lead the field before going down to Pacific Energy by 1-1/4 lengths. No doubt he will be much fitter for the run.

Banker’s Kingdom

Cheng will have a second runner in Storm Titan with four consecutive wins from 1020m to 1400m since December last year and placed in his last three outings coming to the Selangor Mile.

Seven of the first eight finishers in the Sprint headed by Banker’s Happy (third) and Duma (fourth) will also line up in the Selangor Mile.

Duma has long been touted as the horse to beat in the Selangor Mile but his three runs since the Sprint have been below par.

The Too Darn Hot galloper hardly raised a ripple when sixth to Anjou Crown over 1600m last week.

Banker’s Honor

Anjou Crown has stormed into the picture with back-to-back wins in his last two starts and so has Choice Is Mine who is unbeaten in two starts over 1400m in the country.

Choice Is Mine is unbeaten in three career starts. Winner of his only run in New Zealand, he was imported into Hong Kong but never raced there, ending up in Malaysia instead and showed his potential with two wins over 1400m.

The inclusion of the pair will definitely add a different dimension to the Selangor Mile.

Lawson Moy, who trains Choice Is Mine, has a good second string in Irish Goodbye who has already chalked up five victories over 1400m and 1600m in the country.

Banker’s Happy

Banker’s Stable, who has been piling up the winners of late, will be represented by five runnners headed by Banker’s Smile. Their other runners are Banker’s Kingdom, Banker’s Honor, Banker’s Happy and Banker’s Victory. All except Banker’s Kingdom are trained by Johnny Lim.

Banker’s Smile has won his last three starts (from six runs) over 1400m and was the conqueror of Platinum Emperor in a Superme A race on Apri 18. Cheng is keeping him fresh for the Mile.

Banker’s Kingdom has also won three of his eight local starts and a proven miler with a win and two placings at 1600m.

Banker’s Honor three has won thrice, from 1600m to 2000m, from five starts, with a victory over Banker’s Kingdom last month.

Banker’s Happy won twice over 1400m and 1500m and was third in the 3YO Sprint Championship last month.

Choice Is Mine

Banker’s Victory has won twice at 1500m and 1600m from seven starts.

All the Banker’s Stable runners are proven quality and is really hard to predict which one will come out on top. Still, it’s a good headache to have for the connections.

Leading trainer Simon Dunderdale will be represented by Anjou Crown, Navarre and Aquitaine while Artois is an emergency acceptor.

Frank Maynard, who trains Duma, has another strong contender in Trees Of Valinor, a winner of five races from 1200m to 1600m.

Richard Lines will be represented by Good Friend, winner two races at 1200m and 1500m thus far.

The emergency acceptors (in order) are: Jinling Starblitz, AI Rocket, Smashed Avo, Artois, Koondakarra, To Remember and City Gold Loyalty.
