The Selangor racing fraternity proudly welcomes newly licensed apprentice jockey Akma Zulhilmi, a young rider whose passion for horses began long before he stepped onto the racetrack.
At just 23 years old, Zulhilmi is the youngest of six siblings — three boys and three girls — raised in a family deeply rooted in horse culture. Born in Kelantan, he grew up surrounded by horses. His father, an avid rider and horse owner, ensured that every child in the family learned to ride. Today, all three brothers are involved in the racing industry, including his elder brother, riding apprentice M. Akmazani.
Zulhilmi began riding at the age of eight, showing early promise and discipline. His professional journey started in 2019 when he joined renowned trainer F. Maynard in Penang. When Maynard relocated to Selangor, Zulhilmi followed, continuing to sharpen his skills and commitment to the sport. Maynard has a proven record of producing successful riders, including Simon Kok, K. Hakim, LL Tai and A. Nazir.
In 2023, Zulhilmi entered the Selangor Turf Club Apprentice School in its latest intake. Over his training period, he rode in 38 barrier trials, gaining valuable experience and demonstrating a strong understanding of race riding techniques and horse handling.
Now officially licensed, Zulhilmi is poised to begin the next chapter of his career. With a strong family legacy, years of hands-on experience, and the guidance of seasoned mentors, he stands ready to make his mark in Malaysian racing. A dedicated horseman with quiet determination, he represents the new generation of riders — one built on heritage, hard work, and a genuine love for the sport.
Zulhilmi has three rides over the weekend, and the Selangor Turf Club extends its best wishes for his success.
