In a milestone moment for Malaysian horse racing, Clyde Leck, the standout Apprentice from Selangor Turf Club, has officially transitioned into a full-fledged jockey—marking the next chapter in a career already brimming with promise.
Clyde’s journey began under the watchful eye of his father, Charles Leck, a renowned trainer with a decorated history in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Apprenticed to his father, Clyde quickly made waves, clinching both the Apprentice and Senior Jockey titles in 2022, a rare feat that had not been achieved since Benny Woodworth’s double crown in 1995.
His 2022 season was nothing short of dominant, racking up 72 winners, including multiple six-timers, and showcasing a win strike rate that hovered near 23%. His success was not just a product of pedigree but also of discipline, resilience and a deep understanding of race dynamics.
Clyde credits much of his rapid development to the Selangor Turf Club Apprentice School, which has gained acclaim for its holistic training approach. Modeled after elite programs in Japan and Hong Kong, the school offers everything from race reviews and riding simulators to fitness regimes, sports psychology and nutrition lectures.
“The lectures and training have been great,” Clyde shared. “Without the Apprentice School, I wouldn’t have improved as quickly as I did. It’s not just about riding—it’s about understanding the horse, the race, and yourself.”
Now riding without a claim, Clyde enters the senior ranks with a reputation for precision, poise, and professionalism. His recent performances in 2025 reflect a jockey who’s not just maintaining form but evolving—14 wins from 120 starts this year alone, with a win rate of 11%.
As Malaysian racing continues to grow in stature, bolstered by simulcast deals and a rejuvenated racing calendar, Clyde Leck stands as a symbol of its future: young, talented, and ready to take on the world.
