When first developed in early 2020, the Selangor Turf Club Apprentice School’s syllabus included many facets of horse husbandry. The idea behind this principle was twofold – firstly, to give students a broad Racing Industry training and to also offer training for those who may seek and alternative career path to that of a Jockey.

The SLTC Veterinary Department, under the guidance of DatoDr Srikanth has developed and delivered innumerablemodules on all aspects of horse care to the Apprentice School. These included Dentistry, Respiratory, Lameness, Diseases, Cardiac Issues as well as interactive sessions such as Sample Taking, Teeth Mouth Care and the ultra intriguing Leg Dissection, where students had hands-on action with the intricate structure of a horse’s lower leg.

Dr Hafiz  lectures on “Bandaging”

The most recent interactive class was that of “Bandaging”  –  the prophylactic tool used daily by Selangor Turf Club trainers to help preserve tendons and minimize injuries and of course, used extensively by the world class SLTC Veterinary Dept. in the care of wounds.

Dr Hafiz, along with Dr Iman, showed and explained the types of bandages used and the proper application of each on different part of the horse. They stressed the importance of correct pressure, securing and demonstrated some issues that incorrectly applied bandages can cause.  Apprentice A Nazir practicing applying a bandage
