Kuala Lumpur, Jul 21 –

It was largely a day of disappointment for the top-rated horses at the barrier draw for the RM1mil Selangor Mile in Kuala Lumpur today when several drew outside marbles.

Most notably Fortune Tree, probably the one to beat in this second edition of the mile four-year-olds on Sunday, who drew 18.

“I am disappointed naturally, I will study the field to draw up a strategy for the race,” said trainer HY Cheng who won the inaugural race last year with Lucky Magic.

Fortune Tree will be ridden by Jose De Souza.

The highest-rated Pacific Energy drew 7. “I am happy with the draw,” said trainer David Kok.

As to whether the son of Super Seth can stay the distance, he said: “I believe he can because his sire is a miler.”

Kok plans to have Pacific Energy settle just off the pace like he did in the 4YO Sprint Championship.

Trainer Johnny Lim said it will be a tactical race on Sunday with his horses drawn wide.

Banker’s Smile is drawn 17, Banker’s Honour 20, Banker’s Happy 9 and Banker’s Victory 14.

“Normally they race with the pace so it will depend how they fit into the race after the start.”

The other Banker’s Stable runner in the race, Banker’s Kingdom was drawn 16.

“It’s a disappointing draw, otherwise he has a good chance in the race,” said trainer Tiang Kim Choi.

“I will try to have him get up close with the pace.”

Duma, one of the fancies in the race, drew 1.

“He is not the best horse over the distance in the race but the draw helps,” said trainer Frank Maynard.

“Duma’s best distance is 1400m but he has a good chance if the track stays dry.”

Bernardo Pinheiro, who rides Duma, is happy. “Duma normally comes from behind and it’s a good draw to position myself.”

Leading trainer Simon Dunderdale said the wide draw for his runners made it difficult for Anjou Crown (15) and Navarre (11). His other runner Aquitaine was drawn 5.

“Seven of the top right runners drew 9 or wider so it will be a very interesting race on Sunday.

“Last year Antipodean drew 15 (starting from 11 after course scratchings) and he finished third.”

Liam Rirdon, who is riding Anjou Crown, said: “I am on a good horse so it doesn’t matter. So long as I am the first at the winning post.”

Trainer Lawson Moy is happy with the draw for Choice Is Mine. “It suits his profile,” he said.

“I think it’s a strong 4YO field with due respect but the draw certainly serves as a bonus to his chances.”

“It will be a challenge for Irish Goodbye as he is drawn 12.”
