Navarre or Superb Winner?
6 February 2026, Kuala Lumpur
The sixth event on Saturday’s 12-race card at Selangor Turf Club shapes as one of the most compelling contests of the afternoon, with a fascinating clash between imported galloper Navarre and the lightly raced but highly promising Superb Winner over the 1200m trip on the short course. Both runners bring strong but contrasting credentials into the race. Superb Winner, prepared by T. Mahadi and to be ridden by J. Kamaruddin, resumes from a lengthy spell but has already shown he measures up to local company. His only start in Malaysia came back in July when he finished a solid third behind Singha Bay — a form line that has since received a major boost, with him going on to rack up five subsequent victories. More recently, the gelding turned heads at the trials with a dominant display, cruising to victory by a remarkable 20 lengths in a hit-out that suggested he has returned in top order. While trial performances must always be treated with a degree of caution, the ease of that win points to a horse that has furnished and is ready to fire first-up. Adding to his appeal, he will enjoy a 3kg weight pull on his main rival.

Standing in his way is Navarre, a newcomer to Malaysian racing from the S. Dunderdale stable, with K. Brewer booked for the ride. Navarre brings the highest rating into the race and, on paper, is the class runner of the field. His Australian form lines indicate he has competed at a level above many of these, and he caught the eye in a recent barrier trial as he acclimatises to local conditions. The key query for Navarre is the transition. First runs in a new jurisdiction can sometimes catch horses out, particularly in sharp sprints where early positioning and race familiarity are crucial. Still, pure ability often tells, and if Navarre adapts quickly and secures a handy spot in running, his class could carry him a long way.
In what shapes as a two-horse battle, Superb Winner gets the nod as a narrow first selection, his proven local form, fitness and weight advantage tipping the scales slightly in his favour. Navarre commands enormous respect and looms as the clear danger, with the pair expected to fight out the finish and pull clear of the rest.
