Laxon (5b/br.nz.g Darci Brahma – Southern Sunset by Polish Precedent)

Laxon became the first Ipoh-trained horse to win a race at Sungai Besi for more than a year when he led all the way in the Wishes Come True Stakes (Class 5A – 1400m) today.

A handful of Ipoh based horses had ventured south to the capital in the last year or so, but none have managed to finish in the money so far.

But Laxon is no stranger to the Sungai Besi track.

The Darci Brahma galloper was initially trained at the track by Shane Ellis, winning an Open Maiden race in May 2024.

Shortly after, the New Zealand gelding moved up north to join trainer Peter Lee.

Khor Peng Hwa, assistant trainer to Lee, took over the gelding in April last year upon granted his ‘A’ licence.

Three runs back, Laxon ran out an easy winner over 1200m but it was at the behest of the owner Lim Chun How that Phor entered him for the race today.

With Jose De Souza in the saddle, Laxon was smartly away and led on settling down with Pahlawan keeping him company on his outside.

Laxon led by half a length from Pahlawan going into the straight and they managed that order and distance till the 200m.

Shortly after, Laxon began to pull away from Pahlawan and went to the line to win by 3-3/4 lengths. Pulse Bomb came in third.

“It’s nice to win my first race in Kuala Lumpur with my first runner, but it’s nothing to shout about as it is only a lowly Class 5 race,” said Khor.

Winning Jose De Souza said he was instructed to ride a forward race.

“We jumped well and when no one was keen to to lead, I had to take the initiative.

“When Pahlawan came up to me and I shouted to the rider (Ridzuan Shafiq) not to take me on. I was afraid id the two of us were to slug it out from the start, none of us would prevail in the end.

“Pahlawan took me on from the top of the straight but he (Laxon) found something extra after the 200m and we managed to pull away.”
