Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson said:

“Do not measure success by today’s harvest. Measure success by the seeds you plant today.”

Whilst Stevenson may not have had the Selangor horse racing industry in mind when he penned the quote, it aptly be applied that the seeds sown by the Selangor Turf Club Committee in early 2020, when initiating the SLTC Apprentice School, are now being seen in a bountiful harvest.

Of the twenty four (24) races run on the weekend of 5th & 6th August 2023 at the Sungei Besi racecourse in KL, Malaysia, fifteen (15) were won – that’s 62.5%, by SLTC Apprentices. More astoundingly, of the ten individual apprentices riding – eight rode winners and the other two rode 6 places between them!

The performances of the SLTC Apprentice School students blossomed further on Sunday, when 2022 Champion Malaysian Apprentice & Champion Jockey, Clyde Leck at only his second race ride in Singapore, won aboard “May”.   Clyde’s success followed on from his recent win in the 2023 Penang Sprint Trophy on “Berry Bliss” trained by his father, Charles.

The bountiful harvest of the weekend’s winners are testimony to the SLTC Committee’s foresight in establishing and committing to the training of young Malaysians in their career path as race riders.

–  if R L Stevenson’s  quote is indeed a truism, then we can expect many more winners from this young energetic crop of Malaysian riders.
