KUALA LUMPUR:  May 5, 2024

After winning three of four runs last year, CHONKY POTATO started the new season in the same rich vein of form when he easily won the Supreme A event over 1020m on the No 2 track at Sungai Besi here today.

This was despite coming off a six-month let-up and a jump in class from Class 3 to the set-weight event today — his biggest test yet — featuring some of the best sprinters around.

Clyde Leck scored three times on the son of Dalghar when trained by his father Charles, and the New Zealand gelding has just been transferred to his cousin Joseph.

With a winning trial last week under his belt, CHONKY POTATO started favourite ahead of AWESOME STORM and THE MAREEBA MANGO in the betting.

AWESOME STORM was keen to go and led on settling down with CHONKY POTATO giving chase.

CHONKY POTATO raced up to the leader making the home turn and led into the straight just ahead of the topweight.

AWESOME STORM was beaten at the 300m when he shortened strides rapidly. CHONKY POTATO then kicked away to a clear lead. He went on to win by two lengths. Outsider CIRCUIT MISSION just beat THE MAREEBA MANGO for second placing.

“The horse (CHONKY POTATO) just returned from a long spell. Clearly the spell did him a world of good and he was able to win well first-up,” said Joseph Leck.

“My instruction to Clyde was to go straight to the front and try to lead. The horse responded when asked to pick up.”

CHONKY POTATO is the second winner for Joseph, and the Leck cousins partnership. Joseph saddled BERRY BLISS to victory just days after getting his A licence last April 14.

CHONKY POTATO, who had a win and two placings in nine runs in New Zealand, has been sparingly raced since making his Malaysian debut in 2021. Today’s win was his fifth in 14 starts.

“Happy with CHONKY POTATO’s performance,” said Clyde.

“He did trial well on Tuesday and I thought he was a lightweight chance today but he impressed me and had an easy win.

“Feel good to be back on him again and also riding a second winner for Joseph.”
