Rider advised that he had been instructed to ride in a handy-mid position, however, had been unable to obtain this due to the wide barrier and the gelding had not displayed enough speed to secure a better place. On straightening, although wide, he was of the opinion that the gelding had failed to respond and raced only moderately.

5 GOLDEN CRAFTSMAN
(MM Firdaus) Crowded shortly after the start and had to be ridden rearward. Shifted out passing the 250M and then laid inwards at the 50M. When questioned, rider stated that the distance was considerably shorter than the gelding’s preferred distance and that although beaten for early speed, had finished strongly. Vet inspection: No significant finding.

Rider stated that he had intended to race midfield but after an awkward start, had been trapped extremely wide from his outside stall, with no room to get closer to the rail. Further, that between the 500M and the 400M, the gelding had tended to lay inwards but had showed no dash as at its previous start.

At the conclusion of an inquiry, App WW Cheah, the rider of DRONE, in the presence of his Employing Trainer, R Lines, was found guilty of a charge of incompetent riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(b)(iii) in that:
1. He rode DRONE to lead by an inordinate margin mid-race; and
2. He looked around more than four (4) occasions, actions which interfered with his proper riding to ensure his horse was given full opportunity of winning the race.
In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration App WW Cheah’s mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Further, the Stewards considered similar penalties under the same Rule. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of one (1) month, to be deferred, with effect from 19 September 2022 and to expire on 18 October 2022, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his Right of Appeal.
App WW Cheah (DRONE) subsequently exercised his Right of Appeal and applied for a Stay of Sentence. The Panel of Stewards considered the application for a stay which was granted. The appeal hearing against the penalty of the suspension of one (1) month will be held at a date to be fixed.

Following the running of this race, the Stewards questioned several riders related to their horses jumping sections of the track. It was ascertained that a different level of grass cutting had pre-disposed to horses either shying or jumping at different parts of the course. Following an inspection, the Stewards considered the issue and under the provisions of MRA Rule 159(2)(d), instructed that the remaining three (3) races be conducted on the Long Course over the same distances but effected from different starting positions. Subsequently, this necessitated a delay as below:

1. Race 10 – 5:10pm
2. Race 11 – 5:35pm
3. Race 12 – 6pm.

11 BOOM ALMIGHTY
(L De Souza) Bumped at the start. The Stewards inquired into the riding of the gelding in the concluding stages. After taking initial evidence, the inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
The Stewards, on 14 September 2022 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the riding of BOOM ALMIGHTY in the concluding stages. After taking evidence from Jockey L De Souza and Trainer R Lines, the rider and trainer of BOOM ALMIGHTY respectively, the Stewards found Jockey L De Souza guilty of a charge under 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge being that his riding in the straight on BOOM ALMIGHTY lacked vigour and purpose, and in the opinion of the Stewards, was inconsistent with the riding style he demonstrated in the majority of occasions.
In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey L De Souza’s mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. Further, in considering a condign penalty, the Stewards were conscious of the provisions of MRA Rule 48(4)& (8) related to Jockey L De Souza as the holder of a Visiting Jockey Licence.
He was suspended from riding in races, to be deferred, with effect from 19 September 2022 and to expire on 12 December 2022, both dates inclusive. In addition, he was fined the sum of RM25,000/- and advised of his Right of Appeal (3:15pm).

The Stewards, on 14 September 2022 at the Selangor Turf Club, concluded an inquiry into the riding of GORDON G in the straight. After taking evidence from Jockey L De Souza and Trainer R Lines, the rider and trainer of GORDON G respectively, the Stewards warned Jockey L De Souza that he is expected to ride all horses so as to leave no doubt or query.
