GOLDEN PAYOUT hit pay dirt when he scored a resounding win in the RM150,000 Piala Emas Sultan Selangor over 2000m at Sungei Besi here today, thus making amends for an erratic run in the Coronation Cup (1600m) last start.

The Proisir gelding was in the mix when he veered right across the track but still ended up fourth to GOOD FIGHT in Ipoh.

With a change of rider to Ruzaini Supien this time, GOLDEN PAYOUT raced more generously in midfield early before moving up to third making the turn into the straight.

It took a while for the five-year-old to overhaul the two leaders but once he opened up, he drew away to win by 2 3/4 lengths.

“I’m overjoyed with his first group one win,” said trainer Charles Leck.

“GOLDEN PAYOUT came in to Malaysia as an early two-year-old. He was an extremely green as a horse, and it took a year before he had his first start as a  three-year-old.

“I knew he had ability but have to take time to get him right, had to send him for spelling at Cameron Highland on two occasions due to his immaturity.

“But patience paid off. He return much stronger each time and had about five runs to educate him how to be a race horse. Since then, there’s no turning back, kept improving after each win he had.

“I must thank the owner Rodney for supporting and bought this two horses from me early in the year, including GOLDEN PEACH who won the following race after GOLDEN PAYOUT.

“Both horses were working very well coming into this week. Their form proved to be right. GOLDEN PAYOUT would be a very good contender in Penang Gold Cup come Christmas. Looking forward for the race as he is in tip top condition now.

“Ruzaini rode with great judgement, travelling in midfield on both horses to win in style by big margins.”

“He’s (GOLDEN PAYOUT) a wonderful horse to ride and it’s my first time partnering him,” said Ruzaini.

“It wasn’t hard work for me. I just followed PASIR PINJI all the way.”

PASIR PINJI’s consecutive run of five wins came to an end when the favourite plodded home fifth.
