Trainer Simon Dunderdale will go to the Malaysia 3YO Sprint Championship in three week’s time holding an Ace.

That appears to be the case after Mega Ace made all the running to win the RM62,000 Mitavite Asia Cup (Supreme A – 1100m) at Sungai Besi today.

The Earthligh gelding won by a nose from Pacific Energy who was cutting him down with every stride in the final 100m but held in in the end to win by a nose.

Topweight Pacific Vampire finished third in the set-weight event which underscored the strength of Mega Ace’s opposition today.

Mega Ace hah won five of his previous eight outings including two in Class 3. He went with the pace but faded to finish down the field in the Tunku Gold Cup (1200m) in March but bounced back quickly to win his last start.

Today’s test was his second against the ‘big boys’ and trainer Simon Dunderdale could not be more pleased with the run.

“He (Mega Ace) is the best three-year-old in the country and proved that today,” he said.

“He will now be set for the 3YO Championship.”

Mega Ace was out in a flash and immediately set the pace in the wet after a heavy downpour. He held a clear lead till the 100m until Pacific Energy pounced on him.

“I thought I lost the race at the line,” said Benny Woodworth who has now ridden Mega Ace six times for five wins.

“He is the fastest over 1100m but might be a little suspect over 1200m. But he will be up against his own age group.

“He did it the hard way on the wet track which albeit was drying up a little bit after the rain.”
