IPOH: March 22, 2026

Horses from the capital dominated the proceedings on Derby day in Ipoh today, winning eight of the ten races on the card with Guru Fight, Galaxy Grey and Banker’s Amazing finding success in their very outing on the track.

Galaxy Grey (Ridzuan Shafiq) winning his Malaysian debut

Guru Fight, trained by Simon Dunderdale, won the RM200,000 Meru Valley Resort Perak Derby over 2000m .

Dundersale had earlier introduced newcomer Galaxy Grey who romped home by 2-3/4 lengths in the Meru River Nine Stakes (Open Maiden – 1200m).

Jockey Ridzuan Shafiq thinks that Galaxy Grey, who finished on board in five of his six starts in Australia, has plenty of scope for improvement. “He is still very ‘green’.”

Banker’s Amazing (Farhan Ghazali) coasting to victory

But Farhan could not make it a perfect day when he could only finish fourth in the Derby on Banker’s Two Six.

It was a journey down memory lane for jockey Jordan Mallyon who scored on Witnessimpact in the Meru Eagle Stakes (Class 4A – 1000m).

“It was my first win on this track since 2018. I had quite a few wins here that year,” said the Australian jockey who rode 13 winners in Malaysia in 2018.

Jockey Troy See had every reason to celebrate his victory astride D’s Secret for trainer HY Cheng in the Ban Hoe Seng Stakes (Class 5B – 1600m).

It was the Singaporean’s first win of the season.

Witnessimpact (Jordan Mallyon) scoring a comeback win

Nick Selvan opened accounts for the visitors when he saddled Rhett Butler to win the opening event, the Meru Valley Nine Stakes (Class 5B – 1200m).

Selvan had won a race with the Charm Spirit galloper on this track last year, some 10 months ago.

Frank Maynard took the Han Chin Pet Soo Stakes (Class 5A – 1600m) with Forest Gold. It the third win on the track for the Star Witness gelding.

The Wayne Lim-trained Daylight, a regular visitor to Ipoh, picked up his first win since September last year in the final event, the Meru Suites Stakes (Class 4A – 1400m).

It was the former Macau galloper’s second win on the track, with also one win each achieved in Penang and Sungai Besi.
