Irish Goodbye (4b.brz.g Setembro Chove – Margaery by Agnes Gold)

Irish Goodbye is back in the winner’s circle after being away briefly.

The addition of a visor did the trick when the Brazilian gelding led all the way in the Supreme B set-weight event over 1600m at Sungai Besi here today.

A late starter to racing, the Brazilian gelding was five years old when he had his first race last September but quickly drew attention with an all-the-way over 1400m, beating into second place Rocky Pegasus no less.

Irish Goodbye went on to beat two more promising sorts, Red Sun and Fortune Gold, in his next outings – also over 1400m – and was swiftly billed as a star in the making.

Trained by Lawson Moy, the son of Setembro Chove then ran out steam in his next outing. After tracking the pacemaker till the home straight, he faded to finish eighth over 1500m.

But you could not keep a good horse down for long.

Irish Goodbye leaves Fortune Tree trailing in his wake

Irish Goodbye bounced back in his next start, but he found one to beat in Singha Bay in a Class 3 – 1200m handicap three weeks ago.

Irish Goodbye was tested over the mile for the first time today but he took it like duck to water.

The favourite Fortune Tree was the first to break but Uzair Sharudin, the regular rider of Irish Goodbye, decided to take up the running and was in the lead after about 150m.

Fortune Tree stalked him from then on and was within a neck of the leader at the 400m mark. But Irish Goodbye responded and fought back, then drew away in the final 200m to win by 4-1/4 lengths. Fortune Tree fought on for second, just ahead of Grand Avante.

“I added on the visor for him to concentrate and he responded very well to the gear change,” said Moy.

“My instructions were to lead and if I can’t, to sit handy. He travelled well from the start and I was able to go the front without any trouble.

“I worked him during the week and he was very fresh.”
