Triple Happy looks promising to defend the Triple Crown Series title

The winner of the first leg of the Selangor Turf Club’s Triple Crown Series, Triple Happy is all set for a good run in the forthcoming Selangor Gold Cup race on Sunday, April 27, 2008.  The Selangor Gold Cup race, which is the second leg of the Triple Crown Series is open to Group 1 horses of three years old and above.

The Selangor Turf Club Triple Crown Series is made up of three races featuring different distances like the Tunku Gold Cup race, which is set over 1,200 metres. The Selangor Gold Cup and the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor races are run over 1,600 metres and 2,000 metres respectively.  Popularly known as “Where Sprinters Meet Stayers” championship, winning all three races is considered the greatest accomplishment for thoroughbred horse racing.  Since its inception in 2003, no one horse has emerged as the Winner of this coveted championship.

Triple Happy, the winner of the Tunku Gold Cup race will be facing keen competition from other top-rated opponents like the 2007 Horse of the Year – Free Spirit, winner of 2007 Yang DiPertua Negeri Gold Cup – New Kuala Dipang and the young rising star, Kiko’s Return.  Kiko’s Return recently captured the prestigious 2008 Perak Derby at the Perak Turf Club and this four-year-old has never been beaten in all its last six outings.  Other strong challengers in the Selangor Gold Cup race card are Triple Luck and It’s All Money. 

Racing fans attending races at the Sungei Besi racecourse during the Selangor Gold Cup race meeting on April 19, 20, 26 and 27 will be treated to a galore of activities like the Wheel of Fortune Contest and exciting performances. Lucky racing fans will stand a chance to win attractive cash prizes in the Wheel of Fortune Contest.

Other highlights include the running of the Dato’ Lee Kok Chee Memorial Trophy and Dato’ Ronald Khoo Teng Swee Memorial Trophy on Sunday, April 20 and 27.  The Dato’ Lee Kok Chee Memorial Trophy is for horses in Class 1 & 2 combined and will be run over a distance of 1,600 metres.  The Dato’ Ronald Khoo Teng Swee Memorial Trophy, is a Class 1 race over a distance of 1,400 metres. 

The late chairman of the Selangor Turf Club, Dato’ Ronald Khoo held the office from 1987 till 1998 successing Dato’ Lee, who held the office as chairman from 1972 till 1987.  Both the trophy races are held in memory of their contributions to the Selangor Turf Club.

Aside from the Selangor Gold Cup race, racing fans will have a chance to witness for the first time an all grey horses race on Sunday, April 27.  Sponsored by one of the KL top trainers, the race called Barobyn Racing All Grey Stakes is set at a distance of 1400 metres for stakesmoney of RM60,000.  Entries are open to all trainers except horses from the yard of Barry Brogan who is also the sponsor of this race.
