FESTIVE CELEBRATION AT CHINESE NEW YEAR MEETING


The Tunku Gold Cup race meeting, which always coincides with the Lunar New Year has always been the most popular race days of all.  To usher in the Year of the Tiger, the Selangor Turf Club will feature a full programme of traditional and colourful festivities at the Sungei Besi racecourse, including an Open House for all Racing Fans, Prosperity Draws, Valentine’s giveaways, Chinese cultural shows, talk by Feng Shui master Richard Hoo, and the traditional lion dance.

To kick-start the Spring Festival celebration, racing fans are invited to join in the eye dotting ceremony of eight lions on the first day of the Tunku Gold Cup race meeting on February 6 at the most auspicious time at 12:38 pm. 

Racing Fans will be entertained to a host of Chinese Cultural performances and activities over the four racing days like Acrobatic Lion Dance, Wushu, Chinese Instrumental Musical, Chinese Fine Art & Knots giveaways, Face Changing, Chinese Calligraphy, Dough Figurine, Tarot Card reading, Singing Peformance and a special feature by Feng Shui Master Richard Hoo on the Special Stars of the 12 zodiac animals in 2010. 

On the first and second day of Chinese New Year; February 14 and 15, racing fans will have an opportunity to win fabulous electrical products worth up to RM20,000.  “Fatt Choy” packets will be given to all racing fans on the first day.

To mark the double celebration on the first day of Chinese New Year, which coincides with Valentine’s Day, the Selangor Turf Club will present a special gift of togetherness on Sunday, February 14 to couples visiting the racecourse on this day.  Racing fans are requested to bring their loved ones to enjoy the excitement on the racetrack.

The Tunku Gold Cup race meeting will end with a Open House on Monday, February 15 at 6:30 pm. The Club is inviting all racing fans to attend this spectacular Open House at the Public Grandstand. Besides the lavish buffet dinner, the evening will feature the ever-popular Freddie and The Cats and non-stop Chinese Cultural performances. The night will culminate with a fireworks display.

On the track, the four race days will be featuring a 10-race card per day and the main highlight will be the running of the first leg of the Triple Crown Series, the Tunku Gold Cup. Representing the eighth season, the Triple Crown Series, which carries a grand purse of RM2.7 million is the richest series in Malaysia Horse Racing.

The second leg featuring the Selangor Gold Cup race will be run on Sunday, April 11, 2010 while the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor race as the grand finale will be run on Sunday, June 13, 2010. 

The prize money for the first and second legs has been set at RM600,000 each, while the final leg carries RM1 million in stakes money.  At the conclusion of the series, the one horse that captures all the three legs will be awarded a RM500,000 special bonus.

Appropriately themed “where sprinters meet stayers”, the series is open to horses three year olds and above and will be run on set-weights over three varying distances : 1200 metres, 1600 metres and 2000 metres.

The first day of the Selangor race meeting on February 6, will be featuring the running of the Wilayah Silver Bowl race.

The Selangor Turf Club will be organizing a Media Race Day for the first time on Sunday, February 7. The event is participated by The Star Publications, New Straits Times, Punters’ Way and Turf Guide. Each organization will have a race named after them and representatives from the respective organizations will present the prizes to the winning connections.

Racing fans will also get a chance to meet their favourite jockeys on Sunday, February 14. Champion Jockeys like Benny Woodworth, H S Gill and the ever-popular Noel Callow are expected to give away some jockey miniatures and special posters autographed by them.
