The National Horse Show, which made its debut in 1994, is the most comprehensive equine event in Malaysia offering everything horsey and more.

Into its thirteenth year, the NHS is emerging as the most significant and comprehensive equestrian event in Malaysia. Our specific objectives are:

  1. To promote equestrian sports in Malaysia.
  2. To inform the public and create awareness of equestrian developments.
  3. To encourage and popularise horse riding as a pleasurable and healthy sporting activity.
  4. To provide a platform for industry players to establish trade contacts.
  5. To showcase the many facets of the growing equine industry in Malaysia.

The National Horse Show has generated rapid growth in community and trade awareness and has over the years garnered wide acceptance through the activities at the horse show. The success of the Show has been outstanding, representing a triumph of community collaboration, corporate and government support.

The concept of the National Horse Show was developed to showcase the many facets of the equine industry such as Equestrian Competition, Derby Competitions, Equine Exhibition, Farriery Competition, Breeds Display, Carriage Display and A Carnival with Horses.

Equestrian competition

The equestrian competition draws support and participation from the equestrian clubs in the country and from Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. The competition features events such as Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing, Combined Driving and Riding for the Disabled (RDA). In addition, the National Horse Show will also host the qualifying rounds for the South East Asian League for the World Cup Show Jumping, which attract participation from well-known riders from around the South East Asian region.

Equine exposition

The Equine Exhibition has been an integral part of the NHS since its inception some 13 years ago. Exhibitors include leading suppliers of equine products, from horse tack; apparel; veterinary and equine nutritional products; fodder and stable equipment. For the serious shopper, there are many bargains on offer.

Government agencies, in particular, the Department of Veterinary Services, the Veterinary Faculty of University Putra Malaysia, as well as uniformed organisations, such as Skuadron Istiadat Berkuda (Calvary Unit) and the Royal Malaysian Police Mounted Unit also participate in this two-day event. These organisations will showcase the career opportunities and their role and functions in the development of the Malaysian Equine Industry.

A Carnival with Horses

Organised for the families and school children, the carnival showcases exciting activities such as pony rides, buggy and carriage rides, games, rides on the carousel, side-shows, treasure hunts and competitions. For the public, it is a place for fun and frolic activities, plus a good dose of education on the equine industry in Malaysia.

Breeds Display

The National Horse Show displays many equine breeds available in Malaysia each year. For the horse lover, nothing is more fascinating than the interesting variety of breeds that exist in the equine world. That the mighty Shire horse and the tiny Shetland pony should share the same characteristics that make up the essential ingredients of the genus Equus seems a marvelous feat of nature combined with selective breeding, where each breed adapts to the conditions in which it lives and works.

Every year the National Horse show will showcase more than 20 breeds of horses ranging from the local Registered Miniature Horse, Criollo, Java and many more.

Carriage Display

Besides the exhibits on the collection of carriages, these carriages are also used for competition and driving. Two most attractive and outstanding carriages are the Cinderella Glass Carriage and the 18th Century Royal Mail Coach.

Farriery Competition

Another major highlight of the show is the Asian Regional Farriery Competition. The competition is aimed at promoting the farriery profession and creating awareness of its importance as a career in the equine service industry in Malaysia. The competition attracts Malaysian and international participants from as far as Singapore, Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Philippines and Thailand. The competition covers a few categories of Shoemaking, Blacksmithing skills, Forging and Eagle Eye.

With a shared mission and vision of promoting the equine industry and creating greater awareness in its development, the National Horse Show has the strong support of the Malaysian Equine Council, the umbrella body of all equine bodies in the country. All facets of the National Horse Show are fully supported by the business, education and sports sectors of the industry as well as government departments and corporations. These elements have made the horse show a success and between 10,000 and 15,000 people have visited the show over its two-day duration in the past.

Immaculate presentations, a variety of attractions, prestige and the professional manner of organisation, have also made the National Horse Show as one of the major tourism and educational events in the country.
