This race is run annually to commemorate the declaration of Kuala Lumpur as the capital of Malaysia in 1975. The Silver Bowl made its debut in 1983. The Class 2 race is run over a distance of 1800 metres.

The Tunku Gold Cup is one of the classic races of the Selangor Turf Club. The race was inaugurated in February 18, 1968 in honour of the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Yang Teramat Mulia Tunku Abdul Rahman Al-Haj, who is also an ardent fan of the sports of horse racing. The winner for the debut race was Viva Ipoh.
