The Stewards questioned Jockey L Sofhan and Trainer F Maynard into the tactics that were adopted on LORD OF SHANGHAI, in particular over the final 400M.

After viewing the official patrol films of this event and considering the evidence tendered, the Stewards acting on their own observations, Jockey L Sofhan was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

The Stewards’ concern was that there was no contact with the whip during this crucial part of the race.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey L Sofhan’s mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty.

Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of Jockey L Sofhan’s suspension.

He stated that approaching the 800M, he attempted to improve his position, however, the gelding failed to respond to his riding and in the home straight, it ran home fairly.

Trainer C Leck could not offer any real explanation for the disappointing performance and stated that the gelding had worked extremely well throughout the week and he expected a good performance.

He further stated that he only had the gelding for a short time and it is its second run for his stable and he is still trying to work the gelding out.

He also informed the Stewards that he believed COMONBABY may be better suited to longer distance races and he has been riding the gelding in its trackwork and was confident leading into this event.

The Stewards, after reviewing the official patrol film and acting on their own observations, were not entirely satisfied with the gelding’s performance and advised Trainer C Leck that the Stewards would be monitoring this horse’s future starts.

The Stewards further informed Trainer C Leck to report back to the Stewards if there is anything amiss with the gelding on returning to his stable.

A post-race veterinary examination of COMONBABY revealed no significant finding.

App S Saddam stated that after jumping well, he was able to gain a midfield trailing position as per his Trainer’s Instruction Form and placed it under pressure, however, it failed to respond to his riding.

Trainer LN Danis was at a lost to explain the disappointing performance and he felt that the Apprentice might not have shown sufficient aggression in his riding which may have contributed to the disappointing performance.
